Are you a tumblr? Do you even know what tumblr is? It constantly amazes me how many people have never heard of tumblr. And it distresses me that so many bloggers have no idea what tumblr is. Honestly, Internet people, if you want to be at the top of your game, you need to start tumbling!

What is tumblr?

Tumblr is a blogging service unlike any other blogging service. Tumblr makes it easy to quickly post photos, quotes, videos, thoughts, and more. It is said that if blogging is like keeping an online journal, tumbling is like keeping on online scrapbook.

Tumblr is also an awesome community filled with people interested in what you have to say and what you’re up to. If you’re not tumbling, you’re missing out.

Tumblr Dashboard

Here is an image of what your tumblr dashboard would look like (if you had one). You choose other tumblrs to “follow” and their updates are constantly streamed to your dashboard. If a tumblr posts something you love, you can reblog it to your own tumblr page.

Tumblr Followers

If you simply read other people’s tumblrs but don’t have one of your own, you’re totally missing out. Half of the fun of tumblr is finding people to follow, getting new followers, reblogging cool stuff, and bonding with all the other awesome tumblr users.

How many followers do you have? The more the better! (OK, maybe it’s starting to sound a little like a cult, but it’s not! It’s a community).

David Karp was 20 when he founded tumblr. How amazing is that? He’s just an all-around nice guy and active member of the tumblr community. He doesn’t hide behind the scenes and really makes an effort to get to know users. That definitely says something.

He’s also dating the lovely Caroline McCarthy, writer of CNET’s The Social. Definitely the couple of the year.

Julia and her two friends, Mary and Meghan, have their own little tumblr land called Non-Society. I don’t like Mary or Meghan half as much as I enjoy Julia (Mary’s a smart girl who has absolutely no street smarts and is totally ditzy and Mary is just ignorant and conceited). But anyway, I follow them all because I’ve been sucked into their ridiculous world. Or Non-Society, I should say.

Are tumblrs Different Than Bloggers?

Well, yes. How? Hmmm to put it bluntly, tumblrs tend to be a lot more hip that the average blogger. A majority of tumblrs are those cool, techy 20-somethings you find in San Francisco and New York City. Of course there are tumblrs in other cities, but not like those two. You won’t generally find mommy tumblrs like you do mommy bloggers. Oh, and tumblrs LOVE music. Especially the indie stuff you probably haven’t heard yet.

If you consider yourself at the forefront of social media, blogging, and online technology, you really need to be on tumblr. Tubmlrs are the future and if you’re not at least checking in to see what they’re up to, you’re going to be left way behind in their dust. I’m just sayin’.

Garfield Minus Garfield

You may have heard of Garfield Minus Garfield. It is a book now after all. Creator Dan Walsh published a tumblr full of the traditional Garfield comic strips, only he removed Garfield from them (and all other characters besides Jon Arbuckle). This move basically makes Jon look like a neurotic, sad, and lonely man. And we love it.

We Have Lasers!!!

One of the newest tumblogs, this one has a simple concept. It posts photos of people in front of that infamous laser background. You know, the one you begged your parents for in 3rd grade. My parents would never let me get it no matter how much I pleaded. And now I can look at this tumblr and say “Thank God.”

Ryan Adams' tumblr: Foggy

Ryan has been known to go on Foggy and “fickle blog.” He tends to overshare a bit and gets extremely paranoid if people make rude comments about him. BUT this is part of the awesomeness of Ryan Adams and of tumblr. Sometimes if you’re up late at night and post something about Ryan, he will respond to you. Sometimes entire conversations ensue.

But by the next morning, all entries will be deleted from Foggy and it will be as though the whole thing never took place. Amazing.

Tumblr Meet-Ups

Another awesome thing about tumblr is the meet-ups. Sure, bloggers have meet-ups too, but tumblr gatherings tend to be a lot more personal and casual. I mean, a tumblr burger club?? There’s also a cupcake one. Tumblrs love going to happy hours and lots of tumblrs end up becoming really good friends. It’s all about the tumblr community full of cool people. Don’t you want to be one?
