The Cast
When comparing acting, plot and overall quality, I think True Blood wins, hands down. But if you’re going to compare the cast, well that’s tough. Let’s just say that the people in Bon Temps and Forks are very easy on the eyes.
The Men of True Blood
Bill Compton died shortly after the Civil War. He is trying to mainstream with humans and lives off of synthetic blood, True Blood.
Sam Merlotte is Sookie’s boss, a secret admirer as well as a shifter a.k.a. he turns into a dog.
Eric Northman is the Sheriff of Area 5. He is the oldest vampire in Louisiana and was once a Viking. He has a soft spot for money, blood and Sookie.
Jason Stakhouse – He’s tough to sum up. Jason in the books and Jason in the show are two different guys right now. Whichever way you’re going, just know that he looks great with his shirt off.
The Boys of Twilight
Edward Cullen – Vampire. Vegetarian. Sparkles. He believes he is a monster and often spends his time listening to music, brooding, chasing animals, pouting and reading the minds of everyone around him.
Jacob Black is a good guy. He fixes up trucks, teaches Bella how to ride a motorcycle and oh yeah, he’s also a werewolf. He doesn’t approve of Bella seeing Edward, a bloodsucker, so he tries to woo her in New Moon.
Leading Ladies
Both True Blood and Twilight have beautiful leading ladies. You think vampires would fight over anyone less than gorgeous?
Sookie Stackhouse
Sookie Stackhouse is a Louisiana girl at heart. She’s sweet, smart and sexy, but she’s a little odd. Sookie is a telepath, meaning she can read people’s minds and hear their thoughts – much like Edward in Twilight. She’s open to the idea that vampires, werewolves, witches, fairies and magic exists, but often finds herself in a lot of trouble. She’s independent and can take of herself.
The Relationships
It must be hard dating a vampire. They either won’t have sex for fear of killing you or they will, but only if they can bite you during it. Do you tell her you’re a vampire or let her figure it out for herself? Whatever the story, it seems like vampire/human relationships are this year’s TV trend.
Bill & Sookie
Sookie, a Louisiana waitress, and Bill, a Civil War vet/vampire, meet in a bar where Sookie works. Sookie, who is also a telepath, realizes that she can’t read Bill’s mind and immediately feels smitten. The two have their ups and downs, but I can’t say much else without ruining the books/show for anyone.
The Good Stuff
Oh come on. Don’t pretend like you didn’t want to know.
The "Other" Guy
Well of course these aren’t happily ever after relationships. What fun would it be if there wasn’t another extremely attractive guy in the picture?
Who will Bella choose: Edward or Jacob?
If you’ve finished the Twilight series, then you know who she chooses. I highly doubt the movies will change that. It is fun to imagine the end differently though! Like Sookie, she is involved with both a vampire and werewolf. Unlike Sookie, she doesn’t sleep with both of them.
Who would I choose? That’s tough. I was team Edward for a long time, but after seeing this trailer including Bella & Jacob (warning: there are teenage girls screaming) I’m starting to rethink my loyalty.
So who wins?
I’m a big fan of True Blood. I don’t feel ashamed telling people that I watch it. It’s the grown-up version of Twilight, but with more nudity, swearing and outrageous characters. The books are short, easy reads and I don’t feel like I’m lugging around a brick in my bag. Sure the TV show deviates a bit from the books, but who knows what’s up their sleeves. I definitely recommend checking them both out.
Twilight is a fun movie; it’s not meant to be taken seriously. The directing was crappy, the acting was so-so and the sparkling…come on! Still, the 14-year-old inside of me is giddy beyond all reason. It’s a fun read, but I think that series takes a bit longer than Sookie Stackhouse – if only for the reason that I couldn’t read past chapter three in New Moon for like a month (I was NOT okay with the break-up.)
All in all – True Blood wins. Hot guys. Hot ladies. No angst. No emo. No sparkles.
The Fans
Where would either be without the fans?
