Titilating Music Stores in Los Angeles: Topless DJ's Wanted

Like just about everyone who lives in LA, I have strong opinions on music. However, unlike most Angelenos that I've encountered I try not to be a dick about it. Seriously, I figure sooner or later that all of the scantily clad women featured prominently in my guides are going to bring in the readership. And with that I'm totally going to break the curse of this Y chromosome. That or alienate all of the women on Guidespot. Still, my gift is my curse... this curse for you.
Super Stores
It’s hip and cool to tell your friends that you support local independent record shops, but after the third or fourth time you come back empty handed after looking for a relatively popular album, that stuff stops being cute. And even with the demise of several of these mega chains due to the meteoric rise of pirated music online, this is the place to go if you want it cheap and want it now.
Located in the heart of Hollywood, Virgin Megastore’s huge location houses tens of thousands of CD’s, records and DVD’s. For a corporate behemoth, they are surprisingly good at stocking a good selection of imports as well and the listening stations in the middle of the store are nice, if slightly unsanitary.

“Does this pose make me look trustworthy? What about this British accent of mine?”
An independently owned megastore, Amoeba Music caused a huge stir when it first arrived in LA. Lots of my friends used to making a yearly pilgrimage to Berkeley’s location now visit the Los Angeles store three or four times a week. Boasting a huge selection, most everything is reasonably priced as much of the discs and records are used. The many live music shows that they offer are also a key draw.

The sad remnants of the once mighty Tower Records chain, I used to come here strictly for the people watching. Although the Sunset location was wilder and more popular – purportedly a fight once broke out between Vince Neil and Axl Rose in the parking lot – I would see Dave Navarro and Flea here on a pretty regular basis. Nice!

Last time I checked, they were thinking about closing down. This place is just like the store in ‘High Fidelity” although unlike the movie, overweight Jack Black style employees are nowhere to be found. Fat does not equate to street cred in the record store business.
Indie Music Stores
Because it’s not the size of the dog in the fight, it’s the size of the fight in the dog. dramatic pause Independent music stores offer customers a more open environment full of like minded people who are most likely searching for esoteric pieces of music that they can cut/sample/copy into their own failed attempts at breaking into the flashy world of music. Nobody said it was gonna be easy.
This store boasts a wide array of skate fashions, graffiti supplies and a selection of music pretty much focused on supplementing the first two demographics. Expect to see lots of tagger/skater juvenile delinquent types here, although sometimes… just sometimes… their art is not so bad.

I have this sinking feeling that a hit is being placed on my head in East LA this very moment.
It’s a little out of the way, but the electronica section at Music Revolution is unparalleled. Plus, they always have a ready selection of tickets to various raves and electronic music events in the Southland, like EDC.

Record company execs will hate you for it, but hey, this is the 21st century.
For some reason, Apple really rubs me wrong. Maybe it’s the pretentious attitude of many Apple users, 80% of those who only chose it for its styling as opposed to its superior movie/image editing. And although I’ve never used ITunes, even I must admit that the $.99 per song concept seems pretty fair.
Not content to be the online leader in books, Amazon’s music selection is incredible. I also particularly like the asinine reviews that many buyers leave on the site. Talk about haters! Still, with free shipping with purchases over $25 and great customer service, this is my go-to method when I can’t find it anywhere else.
One of my favorite ways to listen to new music, Pandora asks you what artist or genre you like, and then just takes it from there. It’s nice to let somebody make all the decisions once in a while, neh?
A little out of place in sleepy Pasadena, but Poo-Bah’s employees make this place. Always sporting strange, unkempt appearances, they are nonetheless extremely helpful and friendly. Plus, I see them at the Guitar Center down the street rocking out in their spare time, dreaming of one day making it to the bigs. A little cliche, yeah, but still…

Strange as it may be, I frequent this store often, but I’ve never bought any music before. Instead, I’ve focused my spending on their excellent selection of posters and strange and kitschy postcards. My favorite shown below.
