Cupcake Royale

2050 NW Market Street
Seattle, WA 98107
http://www.cupcakeroyale.com

The ubiquitous cupcake boutique, with locations in Ballard, West Seattle, and Madrona. Generally has a fairly good selection of cupcakes and minis, with a pillbox-hat-shaped  topping of frosting. They take special hours with advance notice, though it’s pretty easy to walk in and pick up a dozen. The frosting is where they excel, especially if you are a fan of butter-powdered-sugar frosting that gets a nice crust. The cons? Cake tends to run a little dry, and more than once I’ve heard people complain that they taste stale. Oh, and the staff, on more than one occasion, has exhibited all the charm of inmates just denied parole. But, if you can brave all of that, I suggest going here. It’s the best cupcake you can find in Seattle, but don’t be fooled: you’ll still be praying for Magnolia Bakery when you’re done.

New York Cupcake

1514 4th Ave
Seattle, WA 98101

According to the Internet, this place still exists, but really, how can we know? The Internet, I’ve heard, has been wrong before. I suppose I could go visit New York Cupcake’s location, on 4th Ave near Westlake, but really, after walking through that courtyard, the last thing I want to do is eat. Nevertheless, I have trouble refusing a baked confection, so I grabbed four of them for a dinner party to which I was heading. We all agreed that the cake itself was great – moist and dense, far better than CR. The frosting was lacking, however. It might be a buttercream (I’m not positive) but it fails to develop a crust (which is great for those of you who love soft, buttery icing). The flavors are also quite mild (Dare I say bland? I do. They are bland. Bland, I tells ya.)  The chocolate wasn’t that chocolaty, the lemon not all that sour or citrusy. The overwhelming flavor of everything is butter, which, if you like that sort of thing, is great, but I’m looking for more in a cupcake. Oh, and for some reason, they list about 20 cupcake flavors on the wall, but they never have any of those flavors available. Menu FAIL.

Trophy Cupcakes and Party

1815 N. 45th Street
Suite 209
Seattle, WA 98103

Like “The New Kids on the Block” Reunion, Trophy Cupcakes and Party might be a victim of too-high expectations. After hearing from everyone about how fantabulous they were, I decided to try these out. The price is kind of insane – nearly $40 for a dozen! – so already I was questioning whether or not they are worth it. There’s definitely a good amount of variety – at least as much if not more than that offered by Cupcake Royale, and the cake is dense and moist, though inexplicably crumbly. Sadly, the frosting again falls short (unless, as I noted with New York, you like that buttery taste). Bland, overly-buttery tasting, and with no crust to speak of. Eating one was like making out with my high school boyfriend – after a while, my lips felt greasy and I wasn’t that into it. And like him, Trophy cupcakes seem like a good idea at the time (mostly because of a lack of options), but afterwards, you wonder what they hell you were thinking.

Dahlia Bakery

2001 4th Ave.
Seattle, Wa 98121
http://www.tomdouglas.com/bakery/

All in all, not too shabby. Tom Douglas’ forte isn’t necessarily sweets, but his teeny Belltown bakery still delivers. Occasionally cupcakes can be found among their cookies, but they are usually chocolate cake with vanilla frosting (a combo I do not endorse, though the inverse is entirely acceptable). Still, the cake is moist and dark, the frosting gets a bit of a crust, and the entire experience isn’t half bad. They definitely do the trick if you are jonesing for a personal-sized cake, but if it’s just something sweet you’re after, go for the cookies or miniature coconut cream pies instead.

Macrina Bakery

2408 1st Ave
Seattle, WA 98121

Okay, I give. This place is good, even for an uber-picky dessert fiend like me. It’s not the best cupcake I’ve had (see Bakery, Magnolia) but the cakes here are pretty solid. Like Dahlia, it’s not a given that they’ll be offering cupcakes on any given day, but there’s usually a good chance you’ll find them among their delectable baked goods (fyi: the lemon bars here are awesome. Just awesome). When they are available, the most common flavor of cupcakes they offer is chocolate - moist, dark, dense cakes topped with something more akin to ganache than frosting. This isn’t my preferred way of topping a cupcake, but it’s still pretty damn good. Occasionally (and more prevalent in the warmer months) they offer a white cake, topped with a creamy  concoction that is halfway between frosting and whipped cream. The cake itself tends to be a little dry and crumbly, but isn’t bad – the frosting helps to moisten things up a bit (and ew – I just realized I hate the word “moisten”). But really, with so much to chose from, you might be better off getting an amazing cookie or loaf of bread as opposed to a just-okay cupcake.

I implore you to go back to Trophy Cupcakes on a day that they have their Snickerdoodle cupcakes. Yes, it isn’t cheap, but I’m pretty sure there’s crack in them.
