It seems, lately, that tea is the new coffee. With the latest buzz (pardon the pun) about coffee's effects on health, many caffeine addicts are putting down the lattes and reaching for the tea, or better yet the teaccinos. In a place like Manhattan, the abundance of Starbucks (read every other corner) is countered by equal abundance of more personal, more charming, and less expensive independent coffeehouses. And now there is an upswing of great tea-focused haunts.

Gramstand

214 Avenue A Frnt, New York, NY 10009

No soggy teabags here. Gramstand brews only loose teas, of fresh and delicious varietals. Scrap that regular cup of Earl Grey for a fun concoction like Citrus Berry or the rich, creamy Vanilla Teaccino (no joke: it’ll change your life). The bright upstairs has a couple of couches, a few small tables, and a lot of natural light. Downstairs is a large inviting basement with more of the same, excepting the natural light. With free wifi, it’s the perfect place for the NYC artist/writer types to camp out and get some work done, or pretend to get work done while sipping tea and hanging out.

T Salon

75 9TH AVE NEW YORK, NY 10011

This is a BeauT-ful environment that is good for the environment. As charming as its unique bakery, basket shop, and restaurant neighbors in the Chelsea Market, T Salon offers a little something extra: a feng shui design for one, and a commitment to the environment in everything from the energy efficient lights to the corn straws and cups. Oh, and did I mention delicious teas? Because they’ve got those too.

Enter the Mad Hatter and his tea party (plus or minus a little of the madness as dependent on you and your friends). One of three Alice’s Tea Cup locations this restaurant/tea house (like its sister shops) serves up traditional tea parties, complete with delicious breakfast, brunch, or lunch. A perfect date with the girls, or drag the men around to play mad hatters.
