Taking a Trip to Dublin, Ireland - The beginners guide, because I'm a beginner

-619846038

So I just booked a trip to Dublin and I am leaving next week with little to no preparation. I will guide you . . . and myself through the process. And since I've never used this site before, this will be two adventures in one for me. The trip is most cost efficient if you have someone to share the hotel room with, so I asked all my friends. The best excuse I got back was, “I would but I don’t have a passport.” The rest just said, "no money, no vacation time". So I asked a co-worker to accompany, and after many begging sessions and puppy eyes, she accepted. This is up to today, 1-08-2009, or 8-1-2009 in European time format. I have no plans or expectations, but will guide us through this experience.

Midtown District

Let’s call this the starting position. The Midtown Surprise is going to Dublin Ireland. Trip cost: $669 round trip with 4 nights from JKF airport. It would have been under 600, but I upgraded to a hotel closer to downtown Dublin. Booking agency: www.sceptretours.com

Thank you Mr. Postman

1-9-08 – Got the information from the booking agency last night in the mail (it only took 3 days from the day I booked the trip).  What was included in the mail package:

  • 4 suitcase ID cards
  • 4 “90 minutes unlimted travel” cards (I guess they go by time in Ireland instead of by destination.  It says they were 1.9 euro a piece)
  • 2 travel tickets for Delta Air – Not vailid for travel ( We must have to use the ticket pickup counter when we get to JKF)
  • Itinerary, bus transfer, hotel information, bus return, and information on what bus to take.  It is all just computer print outs, not really helpful at all except for the bus information.
  • “Important Information” (basically what I am trying to accomplish here).  I will scan this document and put it up, but first I have to go to a meeting (damn job is always getting in the way of things). http://www.keepandshare.com/doc/view.php?id=1011805&da=y Here is the document – nothing special

And I'm back . . . so to speak

The trip was fun . . . I guess it’s time to stop procrastinating and write the guide.

How much is that manequin in the window?

She was giving me the “look” but I wasn’t aloud to bring her back with me.

The River Liffey

Widget_bxrhw26u5okykr_q1-efa0

If you get bored with the normal touristy things, jump in the river! That is something very few people can say they’ve done. They even have life vests all around, so even if you can’t swim you can still take the adventure.

The Full Irish - No it's not a sexual act

Widget_dkhgv-wktgciolpefvqxt7

This is probably a 7/8 Irish because I already ate some of it. They had the best coffee I ever had. It was a little resturant in the Temple Bar area, I don’t remember the name of it but if you are wandering the streets of Dublin on a Sunday morning and haven’t slept in 28 hours and can’t get into your hotel room, head west past Temple Bar about 1/2 a block. But only if you can’t get in your hotel room because there isn’t anything to do on a Sunday morning except Church. It took us a while to find this place. It opened at 10 a.m.

Don't waste your time in Dublin

I shouldn’t call it wasting your time, but more don’t get caught in the tourist trap that is <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = “urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags” /><st1:city><st1:place>Dublin</st1:place></st1:city>.  It is a very nice city and the people are extremely friendly, the women extremely hot (and brunette) and the prices  . . . yep you got it . . . extremely high but it felt just like home.  Hell I even watched the NFL divisional play off game and I think there were more Eagles fans there than back here in Harrisburg.

Look . . . It's Dublin

Take a train and get out of the city. Know this though, buy a round trip ticket because it is the same price as a one way. We didn’t figure that out till the last day :(

Castle in Enniscorthy

Widget_dypw_6g3bnr7ayamsrhsni

This town was well worth the stop. Besides the castle being closed for maintenance, we stopped at a local bar and got some Irish beer, check out a really nice cathedral, watched the presidential inauguration at another local bar, bought some liquor (paddy’s – it is very tasty, but expensive) and finally found the real Irish culture.

Prepare for preperation

I hate researching and finding places to visit before I actually get to the place that I am going, so here are the basics you will need.  The bare minimum.

  • Passport
  • Working Knowledge of Transportation services – http://www.dublin.ie/transport/home.htm
  • Counties currency and conversion prices (Euros in Ireland) Currently – 1.00 U.S. Dollar = 0.7282 Euro on 1-8-09

Flight information

Leaving JFK on 1-17-09 at 7:15PM with Delta, Arriving at 7:55 AM on 1-18-09

  • This gives us an entire day on the first day.  Much better than getting to dublin at 7PM and wasting the whole first day and night
  • This also makes it hard to get over jet lag if you get it since we can’t check in until 2:00PM on the 18th.  Hopefully We can work something out with the hotel.

Hotel = Maldron Hotel
Address =  Cardiff Lane
                 Sir John Rogerson’s Quay
                 Dublin 2
                 Ireland
Ireland doesn’t use the number system for their address like the U.S. does.

Where do we go from here?

We looked at some places we want when we get there and didn’t really get too far.  We are basically going to “wing” it when we get there.

Also, the Eagles play the Cadinals on Sunday.  This being an American Football game, I figured it would be hard to find a place that shows the game in Dublin.  After using http://www.tripadvisor.com/ I found that there is a channel, SkySports, in Ireland that hosts American sports.  Hopefully the hotel will have it, if not the local bar “Woolshed” is playing all the play off games.  Go Eagles!

T minus 4 days

Don’t really have much planned to do before we leave on Saturday Noonish for JFK airport.  I’ll update when I get internet connection.  Check the map out I have posted and add places to visit.

Dublin - From the Guiness Storehouse

Widget_bwvvkcn1rn-iv9z158ohoi

One place you must visit in Dublin is the Guiness Storehouse. Not for its horrible self guided tour, but more for its spectacular views from the Sky Bar. If I end up there again, I am going straight to the top and skipping the whole tour, that is my suggestion.

Christ's Church

Widget_cunuounxnhyo9l1qjstulh

Worth the 6 Euro to see the inside of this very old church. I’m not going to act like I paid attenion and put an exact century to it, but it was old. If you are going to Dublin for drinking and such, use this place as a hangover hangout, very very quite.

Not for the claustrophobic

Widget_cohafatd9mdjesxebwlitj

This was a “vault” under St. Michan’s Church. I highly recommend this if you like mummies, or history really. Get in a small enough group and you can actually touch the mummy . . . or give them a Full Irish, they let you decide.

Next stop . . . catholic school girls and a free trip to jail.

Widget_aqqihf3edfcybaopfmwbfg

I didn’t remember what this town was called, but I looked it up just for you. Wicklow, translated to English it means “jail time”. It was a nice town, it was on the hill in the picture, but it had absolutly nothing to do. That is unless you like 15 year olds, because they were all over the place in the city and were wearing those catholic outfits. It’s good I didn’t take the Professor with(inside joke between me and people who probably will never read this).
