How Do YOU Study?

Studying is ... well ... not fun. And I'm certainly out of practice. I have to admit my skillz were never quite stellar (see stories below) and now that I'm all growed up I forget HOW to study. Beyond the CRAMMING of course. So give me some ideas (or better yet funny study stories!)

The "My Room mates and I have the same class and none of us get it so we have to study in separate rooms" Study Method

This occurred during a shared Philosophy of Art class. My room mates and I weren’t exactly philosophers extraordinaire and boy did we struggle.

I specifically remember we had to sit in separate rooms while writing our papers because if we even got the slighest inkling of someone else’s answer it would have been on all three papers.

So, while I still struggle with is it art because the artist created it or is the person an artist because they created art I have fond memories of time spend with my BFF’s .

Oh. And a love of Magritte.

The "I'm going to go to the library but really I'm going to sit upstairs and stare out the window and look at people" Study Method

And.  By people I most likely was looking at dudes.  Lord knows why.  It’s not like I woulda talked to them.  I guess I just liked to SEE them?

I “read” many a textbook chapter this way.

The scene of my college study crimes.

The "I'm going to sit out in my yard with my book because it's so nice outside" Study Method

THAT lasted for about 10 minutes until my room mate would casually bring me a beer.  That coupled with the tunes blasting from my AIWA stereo (Yes.  It was likely DMB. I went to college in the 90’s.  Cut me some slack.) usually ended up in a good girl gab session and/or an eventual migration to some sort of party or bar.

The "I Hate Running on the Treadmill" Study Method

Back to school = Back to gym. And, well, I’m not a lucky soul who LOVES to hit the tready. So. I distract myself by repeating what I need to know during my wog.

The "I Knew It in Class but Haven't Looked at it Since Then" Study Method

The good old “why study?  I already know it” myth.  This leads to cramming which in turn leads to forgetting which in turn leads to not knowing the stuff I need to know.

The thing is … I KNOW I should review throughout the week however the siren call of my saved up TIVO shows is sometimes too much to resist.

The "I am old and out of practice with this whole study/class/test thing so I had my notebook open and on my desk all day at work" Study Method

I would think the heading is self explanatory.  But, yeah, that was me yesterday.

AND … I only got two wrong.  Is that some negative reinforcement or what?

The "It's a Thursday night before my Friday test but it's Thursday so I want to go out" Study Method

I had a History of Art class Friday afternoons. I liked to go “out” (definitely not to the library) Thursday nights.

My room mate (also in the class) and I would study, study, study up until the time we went out. And then proceeded to (drunkenly) quiz each other for the rest of the evening.

I managed to get an A on all of the tests … even when all the words on the test were jumping around and blurry.

I still laugh when I think of learning about the Drunken Satyr. (Pictured Above!)

The "In the Car on the Way to Class" Study Method

Open notebook on my passenger seat?  This could quite possibly be even worse than driving while texting or Facebooking.

The "Talk About It With People Who Don't Really Know About It" Study Method

By talking about it, you review it. Right?  But only if you KNOW what you’re talking about.  Of course, your audience DOESN’T know … so even if you DON’T know THEY don’t know.

Better Study Habits

  • Don’t Cram.
  • Flashcards.
  • Practice tests.
  • Read, Read, Read.
  • Appropriate amount of sleep.
  • Have a full stomach.

How Do YOU Study?

With Lots of Noise

I often study with both the television and radio on. I LOVE noise distractions (unless they’re from noisy neighbors or construction). Actually, I don’t study anymore since I’m not in school, but I do work from home, so it’s mostly the same thing!
