More Than Green Beer: St. Patrick's Day in Los Angeles

But don't worry, there will still be plenty of green beer.

Irish Pubs & Restaurants

I’m pretty sure these establishments will frown upon my penchant for beer with food coloring (honestly, why don’t we have multi-colored beer all year round?), but they are guaranteed to have some wild & crazy St. Patrick’s day celebrations, no matter what day of the week it falls on.

If you’re headed to this popular Fairfax Pub from the north and you hit Little Ethiopia, you’ve gone too far. But once you find it, you’ll definitely be coming back. Perhaps not the most traditional, but certainly one of the hippest Irish pubs around, they’ll serve up a Guiness as easily as a shot of Patron and it’s sure to be pack on the big day.

Casey's Bar & Grill

613 S Grand Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90017

This downtown Cedd Moses joint is hidden under an office building, so once inside you’ll be snug as a drunk bug in a bar. How’s that for mixing metaphors?

With a wide selection on whiskey’s and nice if not overly friendly servers, a great place for afterwork drinks if you’re not ready to brave it on March 17th.

Irish Drinking

Sonny McLean's Irish Pub

How Irish can a place really be if they don’t even serve whiskey? Well, I don’t know, but Sonny McLean’s is still pretty fun for a Westside pub hangout. Probably better if I lay off the whiskey anyhow…

Another go to Irish pub on Fairfax — the oldest in L.A., for whatever that’s worth.

I personally don’t like that “Irish Pub” is in the title of this place, but it’s definitely got that pub-y feel. Not to be confused with that pube-y feel that sometimes you get. Or maybe that’s just me.

History

Hey, you!  Before you get carried away this St. Patrick’s Day, why not take a moment to reflect on the history of St. Patrick’s Day in Ireland and the U.S.

Simply put, St. Patrick’s Day is the feast day to celebrate Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland.  It’s the national holiday and a bank holiday in Ireland, but as you probably know, is celebrated all over the U.S. by Irish, non-Irish, Catholic, non-Catholic, and pretty much everyone that looks good in green.

Speaking of which…why do we wear green on St. Patrick’s Day?  Well, probably because Irish folks use the phrase “wearing of the green” to describe wearing a shamrock (you know, for luck) on their clothes and it took on a meaning of its own.  So, yeah.

Ok, onto the beer.

Cultural (Irish!) Celebrations

So maybe being blind drunk on whiskey from 6AM until the next day isn’t your idea of a good time.  That’s OK, Los Angeles still offers you fun ways to celebrate the holiday.

St. Patrick's Day Parade

When I tried to get some more info on the City of Los Angeles 2009 St. Patrick’s Day Parade, this is what I found on their site. If you can’t read it, it says "The 2009 City of Los Angeles St. Patrick’s Day Parade and associated festivities are still being planned. This page will have updated information February 2009.

Accessed February 21, 2009.

Good job, L.A.

2009 isn’t the first year Skelpin’ will be featured at the LA Irish Fair, but it’s sure to be the best! I mean, their website says that they are one of America’s most sought after Irish-influenced bands, so that means they are good, right? I personally haven’t sought many Irish-influenced bands, but I can imagine that a lot of people must.

Saturday March 14th, 2009 will be this year’s Hermosa Beach Community St. Patrick’s Day Parade. I found the application online and seems like pretty much anyone with $50 can be in the parade. As long as your equestrian entries have a disposal plan. Sign me up!

You know, I’ve never gone to an Irish bar in LA on St. Patrick’s Day. I always try, and then I see the line, and then I end up drinking Coronas somewhere. How un-Irish.
