A travelogue of our trip to South Kona on the Big Island of Hawaii in March 2007.

Luana Inn

Fabulous B&B. 5 minutes from three snorkel spots. Great breakfasts every morning with fresh fruit and homemade bread. All 5 rooms have gorgeous views.

On a hill overlooking the ocean, the best seats are on the lanai (patio). Food is a modern eclectic mix.

Food was excellent in this homey-feeling Japanese restaurant. Don’t let the old-fashioned feel turn you away.

The black sand beach. This was our favorite of the South Kona beaches. Soft dark sand, and just a little further out, rocks and coral make for great snorkeling. The best of both worlds.

A small park with grass overlooking the rocky beach. Fun to walk amongst the rocks, but we never went in the water because it was always too rough.

Coffee grower with tours and tastings. The unique thing about this farm is they grow the coffee plants on trellises, like grapes. The coffee is very good.

A very touristy outlet for one of the biggest coffee exporters. Gift shop with typical clothing, books, and several coffee choices. Free coffee tasting and the coffee is pretty darn good. Also makes a macadamia nut rum cake on site.

Around the Island

We took one day to tour around the island. You definitely want to drive all the way around the island, because the different landscapes are amazing. The south has the lava fields covered by scrubby vegetation, the east is wet and lush, and the north consists of wide open grasslands.

It makes for a long day, so don’t try to pack too much in.

Stopped here for lunch. Pizzas, pastas, soup and sandwiches. Good food (a little overpriced), but poor service.

A short paved walk (lots of stairs) into a lush tropical paradise. You can rush through to see the two spectacular falls, or take a little longer and savor the plants that are far different from home, check out the birds, and enjoy.

Stop for a snack of malassadas (they taste like raised donuts, but without the holes).

I adore The Big Island especially the Kohala Coast and Waimea areas! Once known for being home to one of the largest cattle ranches in the US. Tex’s Drive In, while known for having a bit of attitude, also has fantastic burgers. The Blue Dolphin and Cafe Pesto located in Kawaihae Harbor area are also casual dining top picks!
