Something Something With the Radio On: The Best Live Music Venues in Boston

-620940148

In a lot of places, I often see smaller (read: not arena-sized) music venues recommended really weakly as sort of a “kooky, low-budget night on the town” or “where hipsters hang out and drink PBR’s to the tunes of next month’s superstars.” To me, it’s simply where my time and money are better spent. The people who hang out at these places, at least in Boston, are way more likely to be uniformly annoying college students or (maybe overly) friendly townies than someone’s invisible stereotype of the elitist, tight-pantsed jerk. If you're not sure who the guy in the guide icon is, figure that out before reading on.

Great Scott

1222 Comnwlth Avenue, Allston, MA 02134

Great Scott seems synonymous with the stereotype I illustrated above. It is probably where this week’s big internet sensation is going to play next time they come around, but they manage to snag as many shows of substance as anyone else does. There’s nothing trendy about friendly staff, good beer, and the occasional free afternoon barbecue.

Milky Way Lounge & Lanes

405 Centre Street Jamaica Plain, MA 02130

Hands down one of my favorite places in the city, the Milky Way’s a bar that consistently hosts free music events across just about every genre you can think of. Aside from music, they serve delicious food and OFFER SIX LANES OF CANDLEPIN BOWLING. Occasionally the stars will align and the Milky Way will offer free pizza, whiskey, bowling and bands all in one night. Look for a better description in an upcoming “ways to feel like a king in Boston” guide. I also DJ at the Milky Way once a month. Hooray.

This is how awesome bowling is, if you didn’t know already.

Houses

The low-level Boston music scene, like most other cities, has always had a decent amount of houses where bands, local and exotic, can play in a place that’s pretty much always more fun than a bar.  A police force more active than most other cities keeps the lineup of houses shifting, but there’s usually something.  House shows are the best and probably belong in a whole other echelon of “show” than the rest of the stuff in this guide.

Midway Cafe

3496 Washington Street, Jamaica Plain, MA 02130

I’ve only been to the Midway a handful of times, but they recently (as in, within the last week or so) have gotten a new booking person and have already begun stepping up their game. The Midway’s kind of a dive, but considering the fact that, in this case “dive” basically means cheap drinks and very little natural light, you might as well go ahead and count me in.

The Midway Cafe. Look how glamorous.

TT the Bears Place Inc

10 Brookline Street, Cambridge, MA 02139

TT’s is all right. Some of my fondest Boston show memories took place here (The Wrens!), but the mid-2000’s rise of Great Scott as a venue seems to have all but killed off its live music prospects, with only the occasional high-profile show. Many would say good riddance to the venue with the worst sound in the city. Maybe I’m among them, maybe I’m not. There’s still the occasional worthwhile show here, though, so maybe TT’s isn’t out of the fight yet.

Harper's Ferry

158 Brighton Avenue, Allston, MA 02134

I’ve never set foot in Harper’s Ferry, but I’ve come mighty close a handful of times. Maybe I’ll have twenty-five dollars burning a whole in my pocket next time Dr. Octagon/Kool Keith comes to town, and there I’ll be. Harper’s does exist, though, and it seems to carry a lot of music that caters to people other than myself, so I assume it warrants mentioning.

Abbey Lounge

3 Beacon Street Somerville, MA 02143

The Abbey’s another place that’s recently been making a good name for itself, even going so far as to fly a (great) band from Texas into Boston for one night only. I heard recently that they got a pool table, a dartboard and a jukebox whose selection was hand-picked by many of the garage-rock and power-pop aficionados that frequent the place. Well done, Abbey Lounge.

Plough and Stars

912 Massachusetts Ave, Cambridge, MA 02139

The Plough and Stars has been an on-again-off-again Central Square institution for quite some time. Many of the shows they host are folkier or bluesier offerings, but I heard the singer from Urge Overkill played there solo not too long ago and that it was hilarious. The Plough’s secret weapon is its tremendously awesome staff and the fact that it’s secretly one of the best restaurants in the Boston area. I also DJ at the Plough and Stars once a month. Hooray.

Middle East Restaurant

472 Massachusetts Ave, Cambridge, MA 02139

I guess the Middle East qualifies as the quintessential Boston music venue. It’s what most people outside the city have heard of, and what most of Boston’s classic musical exports cite as their sort of home base. I’m well aware that I got into the game late, but I’ve never known anything particularly homey about this place. The bigger, downstairs room is a fine place to see a band, however, and the worse-sounding, smaller upstairs room has a neat habit of booking bands that could probably play larger venues if they wanted to.

Neptune at the Middle East Upstairs

Neptune craft all of their instruments out of metal and electronics they more or less find lying around. The fact that just about everyone’s father can ignore the rhythm-heavy, post-punk-influenced music and admire the raw craftsmanship that goes into the band is one of the best defense mechanisms against being called “pretentious” that I’ve ever come across.

HI Fi Pizza & Giant Sub

496 Massachusetts Avenue, Cambridge, MA 02139

Following what is now a tradition of mentioning pizza places for no reason, I feel like I’d be remiss in talking about the Mideast and TT’s without mentioning Hi-Fi, the awful pizza place across the street that is the perfect place to go when the second band is unwatchable.

PA's Lounge

345 Somerville Ave Somerville, MA 02143

PA’s place in the Boston rock venue family is “the one that’s very far away,” and I think it knows it. Lots of absolutely excellent shows happen at PA’s, but my (and lots of other people I know’s) attendance of them relies pretty heavily upon whether or not a friend of mine with a car is going. PA’s does have the “bar separate from actual music room” thing going for it, which is one of my favorite features a music venue can have.

The Paradise

967 Commonwealth Avenue, Boston, MA 02215

The paradise is a large, cavernous-sounding, utilitarian room with a giant pole located about five feet in front of the center of the stage. The Paradise is a real B-minus place to see a show, but my favorite part about it is the hilarious way they’ve attempted to gussy up the stupid pole that ruins the entire room with fancy, swirly paint. One of the great jokes of Boston is that there is a gay club named the Paradise in Cambridge.

The Paradise on a night that some band named Stockholm Syndrome is playing. Hmm.
