Cheap High Fashion in Los Angeles
Just because the economy is in the toilet it doesn't mean that you can't look fabulous. Here are bunch of places where you can score a good (and fashionable!) bargain. And don't worry, there's no mention of Costco.
Loehmann’s is THE rite of passage for any bargain shopper. If you’ve never been here before you will be overwhelmed as all hell when you get here, but it’s worth. They’ve got everything from designer bags and sunglasses to denim and dresses to bras and undies. Plus, they have a “Back Room” area full of designer togs from Moschino, Vera Wang, etc… And don’t worry about the communal dressing rooms— it’s just part of the initiation process.

Did I also mention they have shoes?
If you don’t mind wearing someone’s discarded togs, then Crossroads is great for bargains. The Melrose location is the best IMHO since you usually get some pretty nice stuff on the racks (thanks to local fashionistas who run out of room in their closets). You can usually find a pretty good selection of denim here, and the jeans are usually pretty newish.

Crossroads Trading Company
I feel so… used.
Shareen Vintage
350 N Avenue 21 Los Angeles , CA 90031
I went here a while back and totally fell in love with this place. Shareen has the most AMAZING collection of vintage dresses. And the prices are pretty darn reasonable. She has everything from ’60s mini dresses to ’70s mumus, to ’50s pary dresses. I got a super cute stripped sundress here and I always get compliments on it!

Is this heaven? It kinda looks like it…
Camarillo Premium Outlets
740 VENTURA BLVD, CAMARILLO, CA 93010
Okay, I know this isn’t in LA, but the Camarillo Outlets are probably the best outlets within driving distance from our fair(ly polluted) city. While they have your standard Nike and Gap outlets here, they also have a Barney’s Outlet and a Betsey Johnson Outlet. Since the drive is pretty long, plan on spending the day out here. If you get sick of all the crazy outlet shoppers there’s a nearby Edwards movie theater where you can catch a movie.
So I bet you’re thinking uhhh, why is Fred Segal on a list of bargain shops? Well, I’ll tell you, it’s because of their twice-yearly sales!! The Fred Segal sales are bargain heaven. The stuff is marked down about 50% at the beginning of the sale (which usually lasts for a couple days), and after that it goes down even more. And since people are probably holding back on their shopping this year’s sales will probably be extra special. The summer sale has already happened, but keep your ears open for the winter sale.

Sample Sales
LA is no New York , but there are plenty of designers who operate in LA. Which means that you, the frugal shopper, can pick up some pretty good bargains at designer sample sales and trunk shows. A lot of sample sales occur at designers’ showrooms in Downtown LA. Designers like James Perse, William Rast (Justin Timberlake’s label), and 12th Street by Cynthia Vincent have sales in their Downtown showrooms (you can usually find out about ‘em from sites like Daily Candy). But a lot of companies hold sample sales at venues around LA. Here are few sales to keep to mind (you can also sign up for newsletters which tell you about upcoming sales):
- Fashion Co-op
- Sassy City Chicks
- Shecky’s
- Billion Dollar Babes
Billion Dollar Babes
The name of this sample is pretty stupid, but don’t let that stop you by any means.
If you’re into big names, but you’re not into elbowing your way though the crowds, then you might find this Culver City boutique to be a little slice of heaven. They carry brands like Catherine Malandrino, Martin Margiela, Prada, and Vivienne Westwood, as well as more casual (read: cheaper) labels like Seven, Splendid, and Mint.

Personally, I prefer Loehmann’s over Nordstrom Rack, but a lot my friends and family always seem to find awesome bargains here (for some reason the Nordstrom gods have not taken a liking to me). You have to have a bit of stamina to shop here—you really have to look hard through the overstuffed racks to find the good stuff. But it’s there—- somewhere…

The Barney's Warehouse Sale
I’m TOTALLY into this biannual sale. But here’s the trick: you have to go at the end of the sale (which usually lasts for about 10 days or so), because everything gets marked waaaay down. Last year I got a Marc Jacobs dress for 100 bucks! Sadly I had to go to the sale early this year (I couldn’t make the final days), so everything was still pretty expensive. I found an AWESOME coat in my size, but sadly it was still over 200 bucks.
Barker Hangar
3021 Airport Ave Ste 203 Santa Monica , CA 90405
The Barney’s Warehouse Sale usually takes place at the Barker Hangar, which is located in the Santa Monica Airport. There aren’t any dressing rooms here, so you might want to wear a bathing suit or a leotard (men and women are on opposite sides of the warehouse, but there’s nothing to stop everyone from getting a free peep show).
The Barney's Warehouse Sale
I’d seriously consider planning vacations around these sales…
Bargains, bargains, and more bargains
Don’t forget to bring your credit card (or your boyfriend).
Fashion Factory Boutique
8601 Beverly Blvd Los Angeles , CA 90048
This place is in kind of a random location (it’s across the street from the Beverly Center and next door to the Sofitel Hotel), and it has some pretty random merchandise (a lot of loud Dolce and Gabbana floral prints), but if you head upstairs you’ll find the more reasonably stuff from smaller labels—I found a pretty awesome American Rag dress upstairs.
Oh, DSW. I will admit i have VERY mixed feelings about you, but I can’t deny that you sell adorable Marc Jacobs flats and Misonni stilettos at a discount. I feel like DSW is the type of place you don’t go to when you’re looking for shoes. It’s more of a place that you go to when you’re bored on your lunch break and all of sudden, you spy a pair of Celine pumps and you think hmmm….

So this place isn’t exactly cheap, but a lot of the designer goods are marked down about 50%, meaning you’ll pay $300 for a Prada bag instead of $800. That’s sort of a bargain, right? And while the name sounds a little stuffy, they have a pretty cool selection of stuff, including an AWESOME leather bomber jacket from Hogan that I wouldn’t mind owning.

Rodeo Drive Resale
I TOTALLY want this. Sigh…
Like its competitor, Crossroads, Buffalo is a great place to pick up used or vintage clothes. The La Brea location is probably the best place to go. I’m sure many a Hollywood clothes hound has dropped off a thing or two here after seeing it splashed all over the pages of “U.S. Weekly.”

GillianS spends a fashionable insane day in the Fashion District.
