It seems we as a culture are forgetting what it means to help out in our communities. I forgot, a while ago, how valuable it is to serve during the elections. But every weekend, I see volunteers trucking around the Bayshore or at Twin Peaks, weeding and picking up garbage. Churches across the city reach out to the downtrodden and lost... community leaders speak out for minorities and High School students. San Francisco is more civic minded than I have ever experienced anywhere else, and I try to do my part, but always feel I could do more.

They offer meals to the less fortunate every day, and technical training for High School student to help them build job skills. Poetry and slam Sessions are notably attended by famous writers and poets, and I hear they host a shelter too.Situated in the gristliest part of the TL, they offer safe harbor for many caught in the storms of life.

Carnagie couldn’t do it better. They keep our many neighborhood libraries running smoothly and well supplied with books events, and funds. They also offer a warm, cozy place to read, rest, or write during those harsh cold winters. Plus, they have a great resale bookstore at Fort Mason.

Education is our game!!! We work with area schools, doing tutoring, helping with college admissions, and a lot of other stuff… like selling pirate swill and- get this- publishing books!!!! They are quite prolific, having sites in several cities, and work real hard to help the teachers and kids survive the traumas of our public education system.

I love!!!! The men and women who keep the city moving!!!!! For a buck a day, I can get anywhere in town with minimal effort… do homework, write, meet strange people, etc… while they put up with a lot of disrespect from self-centered people who don’t bother to plan and punk-ass kids dissin’ their busses and trains. Who you think cleans up all that garbage and graffiti!!! No wonder they’re having budget problems, but these Bus-drivers got skills… have you seen the roads they drive through???

The POPO in SF are actually really nice people. One of the few remaining forces to still have “Charlies” walkin’ beats, they deal with the worst and the best of SF on a shoe-string budget and antiquated technology… and mostly get shat on for it. Personally, I think they are doing awesome things just by getting up in the morning, and could use a bit more support from everybody. Plus, they are the ones to give me permits, so I gotta like them.

These guys are always the first on the scene; despite budget cuts, they operate a plethora of Firehouses, ready to prevent the next fire should a big earthquake hit… or if your kitten gets stuck in a tree.
They also have really beautiful and unique firehouses… some of which, when retired, have been converted into private homes or businesses.

The most prolific San Fran Heroes are the ones that keep the city’s work force running… Baristas and cafeteros pepper the city, and whether it be Tully’s, Martha’s, Muddy’s, Bernie’s or… yes (supressing gag reflex) even Starbucks… San Francisco’s economy is more dependent on the magic bean than anything else to keep it going.
