The Seven Deadly Sins in Los Angeles: Greed

Although gluttony and certainly lust are way up there in my quest for "favorite deadly sin", I think I might have to give the top spot to greed. LA's a big city and there's lots of mooks to be taken and money to be made. Here are a few places that I've seen greed rear its head and a few people that make my avarice pale in comparison.

Commerce Casino

6131 East Telegraph Rd., Los Angeles, CA 90040

This is the de facto casino in Los Angeles. All of the LA based poker pros play here, and the limits range from $2 to $10,000. Speaking from personal experience losing a ton of dough, if you’re going to play here, you better be good.

Hollywood Park Casino

3883 W. Century Blvd., Inglewood, CA 90303

Despite the extremely high real estate prices on the west side, Hollywood Park’s Casino and Race Track has been around forever. $1 hot dogs and beers bring out all of the weirdos, but I always ignore them in pursuit of that money.

Normandie Casino

1045 W Rosecrans Ave, Gardena, CA 90247

The French-style, Normandie Casino features all forms of Poker including Texas Hold’em, Caribbean Stud, and Pai Gow Poker. Too bad I’ve never won here before in all of my visits. Don’t bother frequenting Normandie Casino unless you want to launder a lot of money.

Hustler Casino

1000 West Redondo Beach Blvd., Gardena, CA 90247

Seeing the Hustler Casino as one of Larry Flynt’s attempts to legitimatize his business holdings, gives you a pretty good idea of the type of business he used to run. I think it’s pretty brilliant that they get male patrons distracted by all the female flesh, but then again that’s for another guide.

Bear Stearns

1999 Avenue Of The Stars 3200, Los Angeles, CA 90067

With the credit crunch and the fall of investment banks making daily newspapers, none of the once mighty have fallen as hard as Bear Stearns. Greed and fear are said to be the only emotions in the stock game, but apparently the latter was pushed aside in favor of the former.

Church of Scientology

1413 L Ron Hubbard Way, Los Angeles, CA 90027

You know you’ve made it in this town when they name a street after you. Infamous for their powerful Hollywood backers and outlandish theories (Xenu anybody?) L. Ron’s religion brings in a prodigious amount of money, usually spent on wacky proselytizing literature and blue buildings. whisper It’s to keep the aliens away.

Crenshaw Christian Center

7901 S Vermont Avenue, Los Angeles, CA 90044

You see the main pastor Dr. K.C. Price here on Channel 11 every Sunday morning exhorting people to pray, repent and of course donate generously to the church. However, with great power comes great responsibility.

Greed

A men’s clothing store in West LA that features high end clothing that looks decidedly low end. Lots of Ed Hardy stuff here.
