Strapped for cash but still wanting to look impossibly fresh? Dying to get your hands on the latest Prada pumps but your paychecks wont allow it? Emerald Dandy has scouted some of the best Recession Friendly Shopping locales in Seattle (and some not too far out) to hold you over until this economic crisis subsides.

Second Hand Shopping

Le Frock

317 E Pine St, Seattle, WA 98122

Vintage designer goods at a fraction of the designer price. Though very small (I’d prefer to say it’s intimate) the assortment changes often and ranges from campy to couture. You can’t go wrong with a stop at Le Frock – still to this day I’m swooning over my $40 never worn Prada loafers!

Lifelong Aids Alliance

1002 E Seneca St, Seattle, WA 98122

Fantastic fashions: check. Bargain prices: check. Benefitting a good cause: check. The Lifelong Aids Alliance Thriftstore is a must when bargain hunting through Seattle. With weekly discounts and everything from clothes to furniture and all things in between, you’d be silly not to stop here. I myself scored a YSL button up for only $10! Be forewarned, you may need to wash your new purchases once (or even twice) before you wear them.

Buffalo Exchange

4530 University Way Ne, Seattle, WA 98105

Buffalo Exchange in Seattle is always hit or miss. Located on the Ave (learn about the UDistrict here), this location tends to have clothing more appealing to the collegiate masses. Considered a little bit pricier than most second hand stores (but considerably better quality) you’ll more than likely be able to find something fantastic if you look hard enough. Case in point: my $30 cowboy boots.

Crossroads Trading Co

325 Broadway E, Seattle, WA 98102

If you’re seriously strapped for cash and looking to sell some of your duds, my first recommendation would be here. Not as strict as other re-sellers and often offering a better price, you’ll definitely get more bang for your buck. If you’ve come to shop, enjoy! The selection varies and delicious gems are often easily to spot. One downfall to Crossroads: many fake designer pieces make their way to the racks, so unless you’re a pro at spotting out the knockoffs, be cautious before spending $50 on a pair of (F)ucci pants.

Value Village

1525 11th Ave, Seattle, WA 98122

Quite possibly the largest Value Village ever imagined, just about anything can be found here. If you can brave the smell of rubber (having been an old tire store) you just might find yourself some amazing bargain pieces.

Discount Shopping

Want the latest fashions at a fraction of the price? Try venturing out to retailers such as H&M and Forever21 – where you can get the hottest styles for a much more reasonable price. Make your way down to Westfield Southcenter (bullet proof vest optional) and score through racks of trendy merchandise that wont set you back.

H & M

867 Southcenter Mall, Tukwila, WA 98188

The largest H&M in our area, H&M often carries affordable workwear while also keeping you updated on current everyday fashions. Check back often as styles tend to rotate fairly quickly. Spend $200 here and you’ll essentially be outfitted with enough duds to last through the season.

Forever 21

834 Southcenter Mall, Tukwila, WA 98188

Little known fact, F21 actually carries menswear! If you’re coming to shop be sure mentally prepare yourself. The sea of rounders filled with patterns and prints mixed together with loud music and pre-pubescent teens might completely overwhelm you. If your faint at heart, possibly come during the week in the early morning when all the kiddies are still at school.

End of Season SALES

Emerald Dandy highly recommends getting close to sales associates at your favorite stores in order to stay “in the know” on upcoming sales. At the end of each season (November for Fall and May for Spring) are when the sales start to happen, and most boutiques often presale so it definitely helps to have a “go-to” guru. Not only will this save you the hassle of second hand or bargain shopping, but often times your SA will do the dirty work for you! Even now with the economy in the gutter many stores are having deep markdowns and sales everywhere you look – so it helps to bargain hunt.

Links to stay in the know...

Neiman Marcus
Saks
Barney’s NY
Add yourself to these mailing lists to keep up to date on upcoming sales and private events. These retailers often times like to presell and hold special sale dates for their “special” customers.

Seattle Premium Outlets

10600 Quil Ceda Blvd, Tulalip, WA 98271

Burberry, Hugo Boss, Coach, Polo Ralph Lauren and the list goes on. Though it’s a jaunt from the city you might find something worthwhile! If all else fails, head over to the Casino for some gambling and cheap eats.

Nordstrom

1601 2nd Ave Ste 100, Seattle, WA 98101

Take note, this actual address leads you to Nordstrom RACK – need I say more? The downtown location houses the designer collections which didn’t sell at the regular stores. I’d suggest signing up for email notifications on upcoming sales in order to scope out the best stuff first. If you’re REALLY serious about getting a good deal, I’d find a sales associate at the Downtown Nordstrom to keep you in the loop on sales. Often times pieces are marked UP when going from the regular store to the rack.

Road Trip!

If you’ve got a free day I might suggest taking a quickly little trip up to our lovely neighbors of the north, Vancouver B.C. Amtrak Cascades offers railfare to Van City for $60 round trip – much less than gas and parking and a far more enjoyable experience!
Though the train ticket might set you back, once there you’ll be able to enjoy discount retail at it’s finest. Zara, H&M, Le Chateau, and many others line Robson Street, the downtown shopping mecca. I also failed to mention that the train leaves you enough time to enjoy Vancouver so that you’ll be able to return home before the end of the evening – no need to spring for a hotel.
