Living in L.A. I was constantly bombarded with Scientologists asking me to take a "personality test", WTF? Is this a special edition of Cosmo? And how the hell is that going to help?? Then with all the famous Scientologists coming out in the spotlight i.e. Tom Cruise, John Travolta, Kelly Preston, Kirstie Allie, etc. etc. people started forming pretty strong opinions about it. SO- I decided to get together some information. Is Scientology something we should be afraid of? Is it as crazy at it sounds? Are the myths true?? WHAT'S THE DEAL?? Here is some information I've dug up.

WHAT IS SCIENTOLOGY???

Widget_abj8tcm5zjv5vx-oadshir

Scientology is a religion. It holds in common many of the beliefs of other religions and philosophies. Scientology considers man to be a spiritual being, with more to him than flesh and blood. This, of course, is a very different view to that espoused by prevailing scientific thought which views man as only a material object, a complex combination of chemical compounds and stimulus-response mechanisms.

Scientology believes man to be basically good, not evil. It is man’s experiences that have led him to commit evil deeds, not his nature. Often, he mistakenly seeks to solve his problems by considering only his own interests, which then causes trouble for both himself and others. Scientology believes that man advances to the degree he preserves his spiritual integrity and values, and remains honest and decent. Indeed, he deteriorates to the degree he abandons these qualities.

But because man is basically good he is capable of spiritual betterment, and it is the goal of Scientology to bring him to a point where he is capable of sorting out the factors in his own life and solving his own problems. Other efforts to help man have tried to solve his problems for him and in this respect Scientology is different. Scientology believes that an individual placed in a position where he can increase his abilities, where he can confront life better, where he can identify the factors in his life more easily, is also in a position to solve his own problems and so better his own life.

Scientologists beliefs on SURVIVAL and THE MIND

Dianetics states that the purpose of the mind is to solve problems relating to survival.

The mind directs the individual in the effort of survival and bases its operations upon the information that it receives or records. The mind records data using what are called mental image pictures

Such pictures are actually three-dimensional, containing color, sound and smell, as well as other perceptions. They also include the conclusions or speculations of the individual. Mental image pictures are continuously made by the mind, moment by moment. One can, for instance, examine the picture of what he had for breakfast this morning by recalling breakfast; and similarly recover a picture of an event which occurred last week by recalling it; or even recall something which happened a much longer time ago.

Mental image pictures are actually composed of energy. They have mass, they exist in space, and they follow some very, very definite routines of behavior, the most interesting of which is the fact that they appear when somebody thinks of something. If a person thinks of a certain dog, he gets a picture of that dog.

The consecutive record of mental image pictures  which accumulates through an individual’s life is called the time track The time track is a very accurate record of a person’s past. As a rough analogy, the time track could be likened to a motion-picture film — if that film were three-dimensional, had fifty-seven perceptions and could fully react upon the observer.

The mind uses these pictures to make decisions that promote survival. The mind’s basic motivation, even though a person might fail in an undertaking or make a mistake, is always survival.

That being the case, why don’t all of the actions dictated by the mind result in enhanced survival? Why do people sometimes experience irrational fears, doubt their own abilities or entertain negative emotions which seem uncalled for by circumstances?

SOLUTIONS to the reactive mind:

Having discovered the existence of the reactive mind and its engrams, L. Ron Hubbard developed very precise techniques to address it. These techniques can effectively “erase” the contents of the reactive mind and eliminate the ability of such recordings to affect the person without his conscious knowledge. Furthermore, it makes these formerly hidden memories available to the individual as memory in the analytical mind. The effectiveness of these techniques, astonishing in many cases, has been documented in a multitude of case histories over a half-century of application.

  • Self-determined

  • Vigorous and persistent

  • Unrepressed

  • Able to perceive, recall, imagine, create and compute at a level high above the norm

  • Stable mentally

  • Free with his emotion

  • Able to enjoy life

  • Freer from accidents

  • Healthier

  • Able to reason swiftly

  • Able to react quickly

What about all the "alien" stuff??? Myth or fact?

The breakthrough came in the autumn of 1951, after Mr. Hubbard observed many, many people using Dianetics and found a commonality of experience and phenomena. After carefully reviewing all relevant research data, Mr. Hubbard isolated the answer: Man was neither his body nor his mind, but a spiritual being. This was the source of all that is good, decent and creative in the world: the individual being himself. With this discovery, L. Ron Hubbard founded the religion of Scientology, for he had moved firmly into the field traditionally belonging to religion — the realm of the human soul.

The term soul, however, had developed so many other meanings from use in other religions and practices that a new term was needed to connote precisely what had been discovered. The term Mr. Hubbard chose was thetan, from the Greek letter theta, , the traditional symbol for thought or life.

A thetan is the person himself, not his body or his name or the physical universe, his mind or anything else. It is that which is aware of being aware; the identity which IS the individual. One does not have a thetan, something one keeps somewhere apart from oneself; he is a thetan.

WHAT'S WITH THE "PERSONALITY TESTS?"

A.K.A Auditing:

Auditing uses processes — exact sets of questions asked or directions given by an auditor to help a person locate areas of spiritual distress, find out things about himself and improve his condition. There are many, many different auditing processes, and each one improves the individual’s ability to confront and handle part of his existence. When the specific objective of any one process is attained, the process is ended and another can then be used to address a different part of the person’s life.

An unlimited number of questions could, of course, be asked — which might or might not help a person. The accomplishment of Dianetics and Scientology is that L. Ron Hubbard isolated the exact questions and directions to bring about spiritual freedom.

The questions or directions of the process guide the person to inspect a certain part of his existence. What is found will naturally vary from person to person, since everyone’s experiences are different. Regardless of experience or background, however, the individual is assisted in locating not only areas of spiritual upset or difficulty in his life, but in locating the source of the upset. By doing this, any person is able to free himself of unwanted barriers that inhibit, stop or blunt his natural abilities and increase these abilities so that he becomes brighter and more spiritually able.

There are no variables in the technology of auditing no random results or haphazard applications. Auditing is not a period of vague free association. Each process is exact in its design and in its application, and attains a definite result when correctly ministered.

Scientology auditing can bring any person from a condition of spiritual blindness to the brilliant joy of spiritual existence

What do they think of other religious leaders?

L. Ron Hubbard praises the great spiritual figures of the ages, including Siddhartha Gautama, Lao-tse, Krishna and Christ and shows how they kept alive the flame of hope for spiritual freedom. He describes the role of the Scientology religion in this tradition and the practical path it provides so that man can at last attain this hope.

Who is L. Ron Hubbard?

The source and founder of the Scientology religion is L. Ron Hubbard, who devoted his life to finding answers to questions that have troubled mankind for millennia. Mr. Hubbard’s intellectual rigor, his curiosity and boundless spirit of adventure inspired his search, even as a young man.

The first widely released results of Mr. Hubbard’s researches did not lie in Scientology, however, but in another field of endeavor, “Dianetics.” The word Dianetics comes from the Greek words dia, meaning “through” and nous, meaning “soul,” and is defined as “what the soul is doing to the body.”

Dianetics constituted L. Ron Hubbard’s first breakthrough, and it was his initial discoveries in this area which led to further researches and the exact isolation of the source of life itself. Man does not have a spirit. He is a spirit. He has a mind and he has a body. Dianetics addresses and handles the effects of the spirit on the body. Dianetics thus helps provide relief from unwanted sensations and emotions, accidents and psychosomatic illnesses (ailments caused or aggravated by mental stress).

Scientology addresses the spiritual being. It directly raises his awareness and ability, and by so doing, he also becomes increasingly able to overcome the negative factors that impair him.

(Doesnt sound so bad to me?)

The Parts of the Mind

L. Ron Hubbard discovered that the mind has two very distinct parts. One of these — that part which one consciously uses and is aware of — is called the analytical mind. This is the portion of the mind which thinks, observes data, remembers it and resolves problems. It has standard memory banks which contain mental image pictures and uses the data in these banks to make decisions that promote survival.

However, two things appear to be — but are not — recorded in the standard banks: painful emotion and physical pain. In moments of intense pain, the action of the analytical mind is suspended and the second part of the mind, the reactive mind, takes over.

But those  mental image pictures containing physical pain and painful emotion are recorded in the reactive mind. When a person is fully conscious, his analytical mind  is fully in command. When the individual is “unconscious” in full or in part, the reactive mind cuts in, in full or in part. “Unconsciousness” could be caused by the shock of an accident, anesthetic used for an operation, the pain of an injury or the deliriums of illness.

When a person is “unconscious,” the reactive mind exactly records all the perceptions of that incident, including what happens or is said around the person. It also records all pain and stores this mental image picture in its own banks, unavailable to the individual’s conscious recall and not under his direct control. Though it may appear that a person knocked out in an accident is unconscious and unaware of happenings around him, his reactive mind is actually industriously recording everything for future use.

....ok your reactive mind is now CLEARED:

The goal of Dianetics is a new state for the individual, sought throughout history but never attainable before Dianetics. This state is called “Clear.” A Clear is a person who no longer has his own reactive mind and therefore suffers none of the ill effects that the reactive mind can cause.

Becoming Clear strengthens a person’s native individuality and creativity and does not in any way diminish these attributes. A Clear is free with his emotions. He can think for himself. He can experience life unencumbered by inhibitions reactively dictated by past engrams. Artistry, personal force and individual character are all residual in the basic personality of the person, not the reactive mind.

Clears are self-confident, happy and generally successful in both careers and interpersonal relationships. It is a highly desirable state for any individual and is attainable by virtually anyone. In fact, thousands upon thousands of people have achieved the state of Clear, a living tribute to the workability of L. Ron Hubbard’s discoveries and the technology he developed.

From this research, Mr. Hubbard concluded that the thetan is able to leave the body and exist independent of the flesh. Exteriorized, the person can see without the body’s eyes, hear without the body’s ears and feel without the body’s hands. Man previously had very little understanding of this detachment from his mind and body

TOOLS OF SCIENTOLOGY:

THE E-METER

When the person holding the E-Meter electrodes thinks a thought, looks at a picture, reexperiences an incident or shifts some part of the reactive mind, he is moving and changing actual mental mass and energy. These changes in the mind influence the tiny flow of electrical energy generated by the E-Meter, causing the needle on its dial to move. The needle reactions on the E-Meter tell the auditor where the charge lies, and that it should be addressed through auditing. Different needle movements have exact meanings and the skill of an auditor includes a complete understanding of all meter reactions. Using the meter, the auditor ensures the process covers the correct area in order to discharge the harmful energy connected with that portion of the preclear’s reactive mind. When charge lessens, the person heightens his ability to think clearly in the area being addressed and his survival potential increases proportionately. As a result, the preclear discovers things about himself and his life — new realizations about existence, the milestones that mark his gains.

These realizations result in a higher degree of spiritual awareness and consequently a greater ability to succeed.

religion, being something not science, therefore irrational, should be considered and pronounced a mental disorder, not to make it a crime, but as an advisory to sane people that religious people are inherently dangerous in proportion to their religious zeal. thank god for hindus. you don’t hear about them raising hell all the time and blowing things up do you? thank god i’m an atheist. my mom believed without doubt that she was going to heaven and that comforts her family as she has now departed from here as of march 29, 2009, being 90 years old and having lived a long, healthy life.

I moved in 2008, so in November I had to vote at the Scientology center in Los Feliz. I won’t lie, it creeped me out.

Jerry Seinfeld has gone over to the dark side too??? Ugh. I never knew until maybe a year ago that the “personality tests” or “stress tests” in the NYC subways were a Scientologist thing. Just thought it was a bunch of crazy people…well, I wasn’t really wrong then.
