Salsaaa Salsaaaa!! Spice it up in New York City
As I am writing this guide my muscles are beating so hard that I can feel my heartbeat in my calves....why you ask? I just returned from an hour long fitness class called ZUMBA. You may have seen the commercials, sweaty people girating about, swiveling their hips and dancing to cheesy Latin music. Well that is what I just did.....which got me thinking. SALSA. There isn't just one form of SALSA or to generalize a bit, SPICE. Whether you like spicy foods, spicy moves, spicy hip swivels or spicy sauces....this is all about the SPICE. I'm considering drinking a glass of hot sauce to take away from the pain in my legs from all of my SPICY dancing. Hm....
Get the blood FLOWIN'
The thing about SPICE, whether you’re moving your body of you’re EATING something spicy is that it gets everything circulating PERFECTLY. Your heart start beating, sweat beads start forming around your temples and above your upper lip, then your metabolism increases. Spice is not only good for your body, but if your moving in all the right ways it’s good for your…..well, it’s “awakens” some dormant parts within I suppose. So set the core Chakra on FIRE and start spicing things up!
Now I understand where she gets that body
Every time I watched Dancing with the Stars I was completely floored by how incredible all of their bodies were. Not like super buff gym bodies, but womanly, SEXY bodies. After doing Zumba I realized that the way the move their hips, the control it takes in your legs, and the strength you need in your back, literally MOLDS your body into this type of shape. From swiveling and shaking you can’t help but get somewhat of an hourglass figure and a great core. Have you always wanted a tiny waist? ZUMBA baby….then you can move onto the more complicated salsa classes, you’ll be fit and sexy.
On the first season of So You Think You Can Dance, two of my very good friends made it to the finals (one of them, Nick Lazzarini won!) their version of the Paso Doble is absolutely AMAZING. Check it out!
SPICY SALSA
Salsa can be made a few different ways and we’re all used to that semi-spicy salsa found in most Mexican restaurants. The thing is, it definitely doesn’t stop there. The best salsas are made with fresh ingredients and just enough pepper, not too much, a little bit of garlic and maybe some jalapenos….mmmm…..I have just the recipe. Ok fine, Alton Brown has just the recipe.
Alton Brown's Spicy Salsa
6 Roma tomatoes, chopped
4 garlic cloves, minced
2 seeded and minced jalapenos, plus 2 roasted, skinned and chopped jalapenos
1 red bell pepper, fine dice
1/2 red onion, fine chopped
2 dry ancho chiles, seeded, cut into short strips and snipped into pieces
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 lime, juiced
Chili powder, salt, and pepper, to taste
Fresh scallions, cilantro or parsley, to taste
In a bowl, combine all ingredients. Place in refrigerator for up to 12 hours for flavor infusion.
Serve with tortilla chips.

NOW ONTO CAKE.....
If you’ve read any of my guides in the past you know my deep, bottomless love for cake. When I realized that I could include it in this guide, even next to wasabi, I couldn’t stop myself. The ground all spice, the pungent clove flavor, brown sugar (what, its spicy….?) toss in a couple chopped walnuts, raisins and candied orange you will want to live on spice forever.
It’ll be hard to go in and order ONLY the persimmon spice cake. Definitely walk into the store on an empty stomach, you’ll want to take home the fresh baked bread, biscotti and desserts.

AWAKEN THE SPICE....
In my class today I noticed that many of the people taking it were VERY out of touch with their inner “spiciness.” It was actually quite a shame to such a large number of women (and men) who didn’t understand how to move their hips properly. Listen, I get bored in the gym, there’s definitely nothing sexy about the treadmill, there’s nothing SPICY about lunges. Zumba is a fushion of FITNESS AND LATIN dancing, spicy? Absolutely. The classes are about an hour long and it is the fastest hour I’ve ever had working out. Not only that, but you’re “awakening” that inner “dancer” that inner Latin lover, that inner vixennnn, if you will. Maybe you were too scared to try a Tango class? Or maybe you’ve always wanted to try salsa? Well this is a good start, you’ll burn a million calories (well, not literally a million) and you’ll start learning some new moves ;)
DANCE SPICY
I can understand that taking your very first dance class after you’re twenty may be a bit intimidating. So instead of seeking it out many people, even if they’re interested, throw it on the back burner and then just watch enviously every time So You Think You Can Dance or Dancing with the Stars is on TV. Sure, they make it look easy and it isn’t, necessarily. However, there are a ton of studios out there have classes for all levels. You don’t need to be Julianne Hough (the cute blonde who accompanied Apollo Ono, and is now a country singer?) in order to jump into a class and have a great time.
Here’s a little bit of a break down the types of SPICY classes you could take:
- Salsa dancing- Salsa is strongly influenced and taught with Salsa music, makes sense eh. Salsa is definitely more flirtatious, more aerobic, and requires a great deal of HIPS and shaking. Expect a lot of percussion, possibly partnering and faster rhythms. Salsa dancers have agile, quick feet.
- Mambo- Mambo originally started in Cuba, it was a fusion of jazz, swing and Cuban music. Expect to hear a lot of brass instruments. Mambo is very similar to Rumba which is a bit slower. Mambo is playful, yet still sensuallll.
- Tango- The type of Tango you do will definitely vary from coast to coast, and country to country. Tango is definitely one that gets you up close and personal with a stranger, unless you drag along your mate. Expect to be chest to chest, face to face. The movement is very controlled, take a strong back and grace. Tango is great for working on musical timing.
- Paso Doble- This is one of my favorites. Paso Doble originated in Spain and is supposed to resemble a Spanish bullfight, the woman is the cape.
- Flamenco- Many believe that Flamenco was started by the Spanish gypsies. Guitar, percussion, and clapping are a large part of Flamenco music. Sharp body angles and very specific hand placement are key to good Flamenco dancing. Flamenco is strong and somewhat defiant, yet keeps its femininity.

EAT SPICY
Part of being spicy is also EATING SPICY. Maybe you aren’t into hot foods but you can try other spices they don’t need to be hot at all. Explore different flavors to use in your cooking, start collecting exotic spices and experiment. We’re all familiar with cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, and herbs likes oregano or basil but what about checking out more exotic flavors like Indian and Middle Eastern spices.
Yes, make some room on your spice rack and go pick up some new spices. The smells in the store with make you so curious you’ll walk out with more than you bargained for.

SPICY MANGOOOOO SALSA
I can’t say mango without remember the Saturday Night Live with Chris Kattan….ah. Good skit.
1 mango diced
1/2 tablespoon sambal
Juice of 1 lime
Salt and black pepper to taste
In a bowl, mix all ingredients. Chill before serving.
It’s difficult to find restaurants that serve mango salsa, but being that Mesa Grill is owned by famed chef Bobby Flay you can expect something a little bit more upscale. No canned salsa here.

Japanese SPICY- WASABI!
The first time I tried wasabi, it was completely by accident. Of course, I thought it was guacamole…because I’m an idiot. When was the last time you saw guacamole in a Japanese restaurant? Never. So if you are someone who enjoys sweating a little bit, you must be a wasabi fan. Wasabi is lethal, definitely should not be taken lightly and should be used SPARINGLY. I’m warning you.
