(continued) If you've ever had a conversation along the lines of, "How many bands do have the word 'Dead' in their name?" and spent all day trying to crack that mystery, this guide will help. I still don't know the answer, but I've created a list of 10, in no particular order, to get you rolling. (Due to the length and load time of the videos, the list is being presented in 2 parts. Featured here are #s 6-10)

6) Dead Moon

The Oregonian husband and wife team Fred and Toody cole took the “Dead” theme further than most. Their U.S. label that they run is called Tombstone and their first album in 1988 was called “In the Graveyard”.

7) The Dead C

The picture above is the cover image for the album Future Artists (Ba Da Bing! 2007). This album is composed of random drones, static, squeeks, beeps, and all around noise.

For over 20 years sonic confusion has poured from the New Zealand 3-piece, The Dead C’s, instruments. They have influenced peers such as Sonic Youth and are pioneers of the experimental rock and noise rock genres.

They are also the number one threat to my writing/rap moniker.

8) Dead Meadow

Dead Meadow was formed in 1998 in Washington DC. Their music has incorporated themes from J.R. Tokien and HP Lovecrafts novels and they have become part of the resurrection of the 1960’s & 70’s hard rock and psychedelia movements. They are often associated with such Los Angeles groups as The Brian Jonestown massacre and The Warlocks.

9) ...And You WIll Know Us By The Trail Of Dead

Trail of dead was formed by childhood friends Jason Reece and Conrad Keely who each take turns switching from lead guitar/vocal duties and drumming.

Their first band was formed in Olympia, Wa in 1993 as Keely was attending the Evergreen State College. I probably know the least about this band than any on the list, which is odd because I also attended the Evergreen State College and lived in Olympia for over 6 years.

I expected a much heavier sound from this band but, regardless of their music, band names don’t get much more awesome than theirs.

10) Dead Can Dance

Whether you consider Dead Can Dance’s music to be Goth rock, neo-classical, ethereal, dark world or simply eclectic, it will never be too difficult to track down their fans at a renaissance fair. Key members Lisa Gerrard and Brendan Perry formed the band in Austrailia in 1981 before moving to England.

The band has been quoted as saying the following in reference to their chosen name:
“To understand why we chose the name, think of the transformation of inanimacy to animacy. Think of the processes concerning life from death and death into life. So many people missed the inherent symbolism, and assumed that we must be morbid gothic types, a mistake we deplored and deplore.”

It's Ok: Dead Moon

“It’s Ok” is one of the tracks from the disbanded Garage/Punk/Roots band that has garnered some valid attention and is also another song that Pearl Jam likes to work into their live sets.

Since I’m already on the topic, let me use this as an opportunity to openly ask Pearl Jam to stop destroying Daniel Johnston’s “Walking the Cow”. I understand that you feel that you guys are covering the Firehose version of Daniel’s version but it still sounds bad and wrong. Plus, I’m tired of reading comments under youtube band videos where PJ fans mention how much better they think your versions are then the originals. Don’t fools yourselves, it’s not true.

Sky: The Dead C

This is live footage from NZTV in New Zealand. The Dead C perform their song “Sky” which is actually, structurally, one of their more “song” based numbers. Believe it or not, they don’t get much more accessible than this. Seriously, the song “Sky” even has lyrics.

I'm Gone: Dead Meadow

In this video, the Dead Meadow song “I’m Gone” has been combined with footage from 1963 Japanese cult fim “Matango” (AKA: “Matango, Fungus of Terror” and “Attack of the Mushroom People”)

Richter Scale Madness: ...And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead

…And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead performing “Richter Scale Madness” live in Australia.

This song is a bit heavier than much of the music that I’ve found on Youtube from them. Maybe that is because it is an older song of theirs, but I was really surprised by how poppy their sound is over all.

Cantara: Dead Can Dance

Live performance of the band playing their most covered hit “Cantara”. After the end of the performance, Gerrard takes time to explain why she doesn’t feel the need to use actual “words” in her lyrics and singing.

(Bonus Video) Hell Yeah: Dead Prez

Dead Prez isn’t a “Rock Band” but I had to unofficially add this video anyway just based on the fact that nothing else could ever be scarier to a Caucasian right-wing soccer mom than the content presented here. I keep imagining Elizabeth Hasselbeck from The View watching this and crying in terror.
