Chicago's Hidden Treasure: How to Relax Without Cashing In Your 401K

Between balancing checkbooks, classes, jobs and a social life, we get pretty worn out. An hour and a half session with a massage therapist is the perfect reward for spreading ourselves too thin. Massages, while totally worth it, can be pretty expensive depending on the type of work you want done. So where do you find a quality massage for a price that fits your budget? Check out this guide to learn about some of Chicago's most affordable clinics that won't require you eat Ramen for the rest of the week.
Cortiva Massage Institute (formerly Chicago School of Massage Therapy)
Cortiva’s massage clinic is one of my favorite places to go for a little R&R. Not only do they offer professional massages for affordable prices, they also offer student massages for discounted prices (about $40 for one hour). The clinic is split in half, professional and student.
If you’re looking for more specific work, such as deep tissue, Reflexology, pregnancy massage or lymphatic drainage, I recommend booking an appointment with a professional at the clinic.
If you’re local to Chicago, check the Red Eye for 10% off coupons. Often times when the clinic is slow, they will offer student (and sometimes professional) massage for $10 cheaper than usual.
Students
The students have completed approximately 50 hours of hands-on training by the time they enter the clinic. They have all been trained in Swedish relaxation massage. As they continue their education, their skills progress and they learn new techniques as well as modalities of massage.
If you’re local and looking for a treat or just visiting, Cortiva is in a great location. Sitting on Wabash and Washington, the clinic is literally blocks away from some of the best parts of Chicago. Millennium Park, Grant Park, the Art Institute, Michigan Avenue shops and the Sears Tower are all within walking distance.
Chicago Touch
1121 N. Ashland Chicago, IL 60622
Chicago Touch offers affordable professional massage to fit every schedule and budget. If you’re desperate for a rub down, it’ll be $75 as a walk-in. Call one hour ahead and save $25. If you book a day in advance you can keep $30 in your wallet! Thirty dollars can buy you Starbucks for a week or at least go toward that trip to Target you’re planning to take. (You can’t buy just one thing while there!)
Prior to your massage, make a mental note (or write it down if you have the memory of a 90-year-old like me!) of what areas are causing you the most pain. Think about how you carry yourself when you walk. Did you pull a muscle trying out a new position with your boyfriend? Too much Wii Fit hula hoop? Carrying everything, including the kitchen sink, in your shoulder bag?
This information will be helpful to your therapist because they will know which areas to focus on, as well as help them give you some self care tips to do at home.
During and After
This hour is all about you! Don’t be afraid to speak up. If you would like more or less pressure, tell your massage therapist.
Post-massage you will want to make sure you drink a lot of fluids (and I don’t mean vodka!) This will help flush out the toxins that were moved around in your body during the massage.
What to wear?
When going to a massage appointment, the more comfortably dressed you are, the better! Since oils and lotions are used, it would be a shame to get any of that on your nice clothes post-massage! Tie your hair back and remember to remove your jewelery. It’s perfectly normal to keep your underwear on, just make sure it’s not laundry day!
Need fluids?
Luckily there’s a Jamba Juice nearby! It’s more exciting than water and let’s face it, anything that colorful and fresh is worth the $4. You did just save a lot of money on your massage! You’re worth it :)
Don’t let the relaxation end there! The Body Shop is one of my most frequented places to pick up relaxation products. My personal favorites are their Deep Sleep and Divine Calm collections. Their products are pretty much porn for your nose.
Order ahead of time and let the products come to you!

No stress!
When you get home, don’t go straight back into work mode. Ignore the emails, missed calls and voicemails for one night. They’re not going anywhere and I doubt anything will burn down, blow up or flood without your immediate response. Use this opportunity to detach yourself from the grasp of our technological burdens.
