Realizing my Olympic Dreams in Boston
I wish I were an Olympian. But since I pretty much suck at most sports and athletics, all I can really do is watch the Olympics and wish I were there competing. Well, that's not all I can do. I can work on my athletic abilities by utilizing the many resources Boston has to offer. Be it swimming, running, gymnastics, or more, anyone can practice and practice until they meet their Olympic dreams. Of course, I think there might be a little thing called natural talent I may be missing. So you'll probably just find me in a bar or on my couch watching the games. But cheering along like a true Olympian.
Jealous?? Well, maybe just a little bit.
So, you’re probably watching those Olympic gymnists and thinking, “Damnnn, I wish I could do that. But now I’m way too old to get my body moving like that. Too bad.” Well, you’re wrong! Absolutely wrong!
You probably aren’t aware of a little place called Jamnastics, located in Cambridge. Jamnastics will tell you it’s never too late to learn gymnastics (or hip hop for that matter!). They actually have completely awesome look classes tailored just for adults. So no more excused for you. Learn to tumble, learn to balance, and learn to flip…no matter what your age is!

Get the class descriptions and schedules on the Jamnastics website. And see how much fun it looks!
Learn to Run and Jump
The beautiful thing about running track is that you can do it free pretty much anywhere you want. You can run down the street or you can purchase a treadmill and run in the privacy of your home whenever you please. Of course, sometimes tracks offer runner wanna-bes the facility and motivation they need to get better and faster. But it’s not doubt that running can be a poor-man’s sport. So you really have no excuses now, do you? Tie on those running shoes and get out there and hit the pavement!
You can become a member of the Reggie Lewis Center and have access to their indoor track, gym, fitness classes, etc. for a pretty nice price.
Not only can you practice your speed and endurance, you can get buff, learn some skills, and just become more athletic overall. With a name like Reggie Lewis, it’s gotta be good!

Triple Jumping Event
Once upon a time I was a triple jumper. Albeit not a very good one and certainly nowhere near the level of an Olympian. But this just means I can appreciate the art of triple jumping SO much. And I absolutely love watching the Olympic event. I think it’s completely crazy how far these people can jump and I’m extremely jealous that I could never ever come anywhere close.
Watch the triple jumping event at the Olympics and you’ll see that it’s so much more than just a hop, skip, and a jump!
Look at that height! Look at those legs! Seriously amazing.
Watch the Olympics At the Bar
You’re probably used to going to bars and watching the Sox or the Patriots on TV, right? And I mean, that’s all good and everything, but during the Olympics, don’t you want to be watching them? Think about the U.S. pride you’ll feel cheering on your country with everyone in the bar.
I went to Tavern in the Square during the Opening Ceremonies of the Olympics. I had made plans weeks earlier, but now was a little upset I would be missing the ceremonies. But when I got to the Tavern in the Square, they had the Olympic ceremonies on all of their TVs! YES!
Of course they didn’t have sound, but it was still pretty cool to actually get to watch and see all the athletes walking in the ceremony. And it was crazy how many people were actually just staring intently at the TVs while hanging out with their friends and having a couple beers. Huge points for the Tavern!

Friday night was my first time at Tavern in the Square in Central Square and I will definitely be back!
Clery’s is another winner of a bar. I went there with Sara on Saturday night and we were a bit dismayed to find that the Red Sox were playing on every TV. I love the Sox, but with so many TVs, couldn’t one be spared for the Olympics??
So we nicely asked the bartender to change the channel on one of the TVs. He wasn’t sure that he could, but finally did it for us. Some of the men around us laughed because Sara and I were intent on seeing the men gymnasts. But before long, everyone in our room at Clery’s was watching the Olympics instead of the Sox. And we all got to experience Michael Phelps first gold medal of the games and world-record winning swim! Everyone was cheering and clapping and it just felt so amazing.
All thanks to Sara and me. And the awesomeness of Clery’s.

Clery’s will tune some of their TVs into the Olympics if you ask nicely. It doesn’t hurt if you flirt a little bit with the bartenders either. Just trust me on that.
If he can do it, you can too, right? Yes? Maybe? No? Keep trying.
Evelyn Kirrane Aquatic Center
60 Tappan St. Brookline, MA 02446
So you want to be a swimmer? Kind of difficult to do without a pool, eh? Lucky for you, Brookline has a great pool that you can swim in! It’s only $5 for adult residents of Brookline and $8 for non-residents.
Check out the Brookline Swimming Pool website to learn when they’re open, how to get there, and all kinds of other details to get you swimming like a fish.
Mirabella Pool
475 R. Commercial St. Boston, MA 02113
Or maybe you’re a resident of Boston looking to become the next Michael Phelps. You can always start your training at the Mirabella Pool in the North End of Boston. All Boston residents are free to use the pool, but it will cost you $10/visit.
Obviously it helps if your pool is regulation-size, making it kind of difficult to properly train in your backyard pool.
Or maybe you don’t really need to train right now, but you do want to work on sunning your bathing suit body. After all, if you’re going to be a swimmer, you need to look like one, right? So head over to the Colonnade Hotel’s rooftop pool, where you can spend the day for $30. You won’t see anyone doing laps, but you can sip some sangria if you choose. What? An Olympian wouldn’t do that? Whatev.

Haha Pre-Olympic Boston Moment
This picture, from the April 2008 Olympic marathon trials in Boston, just made me laugh. But then, most pictures of Menino make me laugh. He looks part proud, part confused out of his mind.
Obviously Nike is a huge sponsor of the Olympics. So what better way to support the Olympics than to go shop at Niketown? You can stock up on your Olympic fan gear, or you can buy tons of athletic apparel that will have you feeling like an Olympian without ever having to step onto a field or get your heart rate up.
Niketown on Newbury St. is an Olympic-worthy experience in itself. You could legitimately spend all day in this place. And a whole lotta dough.

Nike knows the Olympics better than anyone else. And Niketown is a blast for athletes, athlete wanna-bes, and people who just plain like to sit around in a comfy pair of sweats and a t-shirt.
Who needs Olympic basketball when we’ve got the Celtics here in Boston?? Wait for the season to start again and head over to the TD Banknorth Garden to catch a game or two. Of course, I have a feeling Celtics tickets might be a bit difficult to come by this year.
But watch the Olympics bball games and try not to be too saddened by the fact there are no Celtics players participating. We already know they’re the best.

Our own little Olympic team right here in Boston. These 3 could probably crush all the competition alone.
Be an Olympian in Boston!
OK, so maybe you’ll never be an Olympian, but that doesn’t mean you should give up on all your dreams. Keep training, keep practicing, and take advantage of all that Boston has to offer.
Or, of course, you could just watch the Olympics in a local bar (or on your couch) all decked out in your Nike gear.
Your choice. Whatever you decide, Boston’s got you covered.
