Beat The Rain In San Francisco
Are your emotions hopelessly susceptible to the burdens of the weather? Does the fog make you want to spend all day in bed eating Fig Newtons and watching a marathon of TLC’s “A Wedding Story?” Then it’s time to become a true San Franciscan, and weatherproof yourself during the rainy season with these uplifting tips. Follow through, and you’ll start praying to the rain gods more than you did back in the day when your dad forced you to play t-ball.
Get Serious About Rain Gear
Buy Cool Rubber Boots
Tap into your ingenuous puddle-splashing past with a pair of boldly patterned rubber boots. You’ll be surprised how dry socks will improve your outdoor adventures. You will also find that even when it’s rainy, a lot of San Franciscans still hit the streets. Don’t miss out!
Remember, Ugly Is The New Pretty
Unless you want to drop a couple hundred dollars at Burberry, there’s pretty much no such thing as finding an attractive rain boot. So dive in, and embrace the true potential ugliness of my favorite footwear by choosing an obnoxious polka dot or giraffe pattern. No matter which you choose, when it’s raining, you’ll still feel more stylish than the idiot girl slipping around in her Christian Louboutins.
Freshen Up Your Umbrella Box
Toss out that old Universal Studios umbrella that someone left at your house – you know, the one that has spikey prongs and has definitely been blown inside-out a few times. Instead, opt for a new fun choice
Find A Cool Raincoat
Don’t be trapped by the tyranny of the umbrella. Instead, get a cool plastic poncho or rain slicker.
This is the ultimate rainy day coffee bar. Everything you need to stay warm, dry and fed for an entire day of WiFi love. Swing by early to snag a seat before the rush.

Terra Mia
1314 Castro Street San Francisco, CA 94114
Tell someone you love them by painting a giant ceramic snowman cookie jar at this paint ‘n’ fire ceramics spot. It’ll keep you dry and out of the tavern.
Smell
Pull out that dusty oil burner you bought for $5 in Venice Beach, then never used. Conjure your inner hippie by lighting it, and all of those forgotten secret santa candles you got. You’ll be smelling like a Pottery Barn in a flash.
Taste
Stay warm with spicy, flavorful, slow-cook dishes. Make a homemade chili, or a spicy Aztec hot chocolate. Take the time to enjoy the simple stuff.
Rachael Ray is annoying, and so are the titles of her dishes, but she definitely has the spicy flavorful soup thing down.

Even though Target never seems to keep rain boots in stock, their website has a mind-boggling selection.
You can even find these Mary Poppins umbrellas at Walgreen’s.
Or Get Six-Flags-Classy With A Garbage Bag
Try this cozy deli’s delicious Vietnamese soups, particularly the legendary chicken soup special on Mondays.

Roll out of your house in sweats and head this relaxed Inner Sunset bar. You can get cozy and set up an epic game of Risk with that same basement charm, only without the chance that some nerd is going to stay until 3 in the morning to finish. If you drive, there’s parking a plenty.

Sugar Cafe

Come sip some Napoleon brandy by the fireplace at this cozy cafe.
...Or Stay In
Don’t feel sorry for yourself by laying in that same crumb-coated indentation on the couch. Instead, make your indoor space into a sanctuary that appeals to all five senses.
Sound
Throw on some relaxing music that you may not normally listen to. My favorite rainy day album is “Chet Baker Sings.” Try punching it into Pandora.
Sight/Touch
Get out your bunny slippers and put on those dimmers.
Wake Up And Smell The Dirt
Everyone makes fun of me and my dirt perfume, but personally, I find it to be a peaceful reminder of rain’s silver lining, so always wear it on stormy days. (And I’d venture to say that there’s nothing more unisex than dirt). It evokes that giddy excitement of spring gardens, water fights, cutting worms in two to see if they really have multiple hearts, and laying on the sidewalk to create human outlines. You know.
