PRK Vision Correction Surgery
I had eye glasses for 22 years, and contacts for 17 years. The everyday hassle of my contacts make me consider vision correction surgery. Because I was near sighted and had astigmatism, it was recommended for me to do Custom PRK surgery. This guide is a step-by-step of my PRK surgery.
What is PRK?
PRK (Photorefractive Keratectomy), is an outpatient laser vision correction procedure to reshape the curvature of the eye for patients with nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism. PRK differs from LASIK as no flap is created during the PRK procedure. PRK may be suitable for people with larger pupils, thin corneas, have other corneal issues or dry eyes.
Am I a Candidate?
My prescription was -8.5 with 235/20. I am a candidate for PRK, but chose to do Custom PRK to ensure my astigmatism would be resolved as well. I also had a thin cornea so I couldn’t do LASIK, since I needed the extra cornea that would have been cut from the flap of doing LASIK.
Before the Procedure
Two weeks, before the surgery I stopped wearing my contacts. This was really tough since I am very active and don’t wear my glasses often. Plus the prescription on my glasses was very old… but I didn’t let that stop me from traveling and going to Disneyland!
I also had a few check-ins and wave scans with Dr. Drucker to make sure my eyes were ready for the big day.

I have been going to MyOptics for over 5 years. Dr. David Drucker performed my surgery, he is great. He has performed laser surgery for over 20 years. He makes you feel realized and very comfortable during the entire process.
TLC Vision Center was great! They were very helpful and knowledgeable, they made me feel very comfortable during my surgery.

The Big Day!
My surgery was scheduled for a Thursday afternoon around 430pm. My mom and boyfriend meet me at the Laser center. We arrived at 345pm to get any last forms filled out. I was taken back to the waiting room where I took the Valium, and eye numbing drops. The nurse had me wait for about 20 mins to allow the meds to kick in. Once I was ready, I was taken back to the surgery room, my mom and boyfriend were able to watch the entire surgery.
My boyfriend videoed the surgery, and you can hear the nurse talk him through what is happening with the first eye during the surgery.
The one thing I remember the most is the ice cold water on my eye, it gave me the worst brain freeze.
Day 1 After Surgery
I slept a lot, took that Friday off and relaxed. Did watch TV or look at the computer screen. I made sure to take all of the eye drops directed by Dr. Drucker. I didn’t use any of the pain medicine because I get migraines and didn’t want a rebound headache. There was only one night a few days after my surgery, where I took the eye drop pain killer because my eyes were really scratchy and I couldn’t sleep.
Day 2 after my surgery
After sleeping all day on Friday, we headed down to my parents in Colorado Springs, and went for a small hike and took the train ride up to the top of Pike Peak. I wore some heavy duty glasses, and got a few stares. You know you look funny when little kids are just staring at you, looking a bit confused.
The goggles/glasses were great, they didn’t let much sun or wind near my eyes. I had a hard time for a few weeks with the brightness of sunlight and computer screens, but was able to drive within 2 days of my surgery.
My eyes were at 40/20 by day 2, and 20/20 within 2 weeks! PRK takes longer to heal versus LASIK where you are 20/20 immediately after surgery.
My eyes were a little sensitive to dust or makeup for about 2 months, so make sure you keep the refresh drops near by.
Back to Everyday Living!
By Day 4 after the surgery, I was back to work. Had a hard time with the computer screen and items that were projected on the wall. After a few days, my eyes adjusted and I was back to normal – minus the contacts of course!
More than 300,000 patients in roughly 47 countries have undergone PRK, and in a recent survey 95% of these patients said they were happy with their PRK results.
82% of myopic (nearsighted) patients enjoy vision of 20/25 or better, while 98% of these patients enjoy PRK success with vision of 20/40 or better within one year.
