I recently went to Portland for a wedding and was blown away by what I witnessed. I was totally expecting to see a bunch hippie vegans driving around in priuses. Instead what I witnessed was a town totally infatuated with bacon and other assorted pork products! AWESOME!! I fell in love with Pork-land, and in honor of International Bacon Day today (Sept 5th) I present the best places to pig out during your visit to Stumptown.

Voodoo Doughnuts

22 Sw 3rd Ave, Portland, OR 97204

Voodoo Doughnuts: Where Doughnut meets bacon.

Voodoo creates the perfect combo of doughnut and pork with their heaven-like maple bacon doughnut. There are over 60 different types of doughnuts here including everything from captain crunch to Oreos. IT. IS. AWESOME.

Be prepared to wait in line for about half an hour. But trust me, it’s worth it.

Before you leave grab a souvenir pair of panties that say “Good things come in pink boxes”…or don’t.

Hooray! It’s bigger than my head!

Mother's Bistro & Bar

212 Sw Stark St, Portland, OR 97204

This is the best breakfast in Portland hands down. They have something on the menu called breakfast nachos that include potatoes, bacon, two types of cheeses, sour cream, salsa and chives. Need I say more?

Bijou Cafe

132 Sw 3rd Ave, Portland, OR 97204

When the line is too long at Mother’s head to Bijou’s. Pig out on the homemade pork sausage patty and farm fresh eggs.

Check out Portland's Food Cart Culture

No trip to Portland is complete without purchasing at least one food item from a street cart. El Guapo recommends pigging out on carnitas street tacos at the corner of Stark and 2nd. For only $2 a piece (corn or flour) you can’t beat the price.

Le Pigeon (El Guapo's Pick)

Widget_btj2dpdlzouanhs55w1mru

I have an irrational fear slash borderline hatred of pigeons, so when my buddy recommended I go to this place, I was a little skeptical to say the least.

The food, however was phenomenal. The menu is pretty exotic with things like beef hearts, frog leg gnocchi and fois gras profiteroles. But the atmosphere is very unpretentious, as people sit at communal tables in this tiny six table restaurant.

Saburo's Sushi House Restaurant

1667 Se Bybee Blvd, Portland, OR 97202

Be Prepared for Sushi Gluttony. This is the biggest sushi you will ever eat. (the pictures don’t do justice). It’s also super fresh and RI-DIC-ULOUSLY cheap. Most rolls are between $6.50 and $8.00. It’s like going into a time warp to the 1980s. This place is popular, and they don’t take reservations. So if you want a table you have to get here at 4:30 and wait in line for the opening at 5:00

Making an effort to Single-handedly diminish the Tuna fishery with these GIGANTIC rolls.

Live Irish music and about 50 different types of whiskey. Fun bar to hang out at. A double Jameson and ginger ale will put you back about $12.

Drink until you can't see straight at Full Sail Brewery

If you like IPAs or amber ales, a visit to the Full Sail Brewery is a must. The real deal brewery is in Hood River, but if you head to McCormick and Schmick’s you can get this AWESOME six-beer sampler for $9

Doug Fir Lounge

830 E Burnside St, Portland, OR 97214

Super-hipstery bar next to le Pigeon. Live music every night. The artichoke dip ain’t bad either.

The retro diner design, live music and $1 PBRs attract an upscale hipster crowd to Doug Firs.

It tastes like when your maple syrup spills over from your pancakes onto your bacon.

Portland or Pork-land?

People in Portland really love their bacon and bacon novelty items.

Le Pigeon is for serious Pork Fans

They take their pork seriously at Le Pigeon. I take people who take their pork seriously seriously. To do my part, I managed to eat pork for every course.

Appetizer: Pork belly on a fried green tomato and pickles.

Entree: Pork with peaches and pickled peppers

Dessert: Apricot Cornbread with bacon and maple ice cream

Stumptown Coffee Roasters

1022 Sw Stark St, Portland, OR 97205

Best coffee in Portland, hands down. Plus they have cool art on the wall that you can buy.

Saburos vs. Sbarros

Don’t get confused like we did. Although Saburos and Sbarro’s sound the same the rainbow rolls at Sbarro’s are not nearly as good.

Other Microbrews to try`

Portland is the microbrewery capital of the world. Full Sail is my favorite but there are tons to choose from like Rogue and Deschuttes right in town.

You’ve convinced me I need to go to Portland! I can’t believe I’ve never been, but I think I need to put it pretty high up on my list! Donuts, beer, and bacon… YUM!

Whoa! In a rare move, I got a sandwich from Whole Foods today that came with bacon. I’m not a bacon person. I subconsciously felt that it was International Bacon Day!
