How to buy the perfect holiday gift for your child's teacher.

Teachers always appreciate gifts at Christmas, but some gifts go farther than others.  Whatever you give will be appreciated, but think carefully about what you give.  Holiday socks?  No, thank you.  A Ham?  Gee, thanks.  Pajamas?  That’s just weird.  Here are some tips to help you give the best possible Christmas gift to the teachers in your life!

Enough with the Apples!

Believe it or not, all teachers aren’t into collecting charming little apple knick knacks. In fact, most of us aren’t. You might think that the apple ornament, door swag, or bracelet is super cute and thoughtful, but I got 10 of those ornaments last year.

Another Coffee Mug?

I love coffee as much as the next person, but I don’t need any more coffee mugs. Generally, I get anywhere from 6-10 coffee mugs each Christmas. Nice as they are, I just don’t have the space for them and they usually end up at Goodwill.

Sure, My Skin is Dry...

…but it’s not that dry.  Under my sink is a mini Bath and Body Works.  I have dozens of bottles of lotion, bubble bath, and body splash that I can’t use because I have severe skin allergies.  While the thought is appreciated, the lovely smelling lotion you give me usually ends up as a bonus Christmas gift for my mom or my sister.

Thank You Goes a Long Way

Cheesy as it sounds, my favorite gifts are thoughtful thank you cards.  Expressing your thanks and gratitude for the work that I’ve done is a wonderful way to remember me at Christmas time.  Those cards are a lovely reminder that you’ve actually noticed and really do appreciate the work that I do.  Rather than getting donated or re-gifted, the cards stay with me and are a great reminder of why I do what I do!

Think Handmade

If you really want to go beyond a thank you card, handmade gifts are always appreciated. Knit me a scarf or make me an ornament for me tree. Better still, have your child help you make the gift. After all, you want them to appreciate their teachers too!

Consider a Donation

Teachers spend hundreds of dollars of their own money on classroom supplies each year. Consider making a donation to the classroom instead of another Starbucks gift card. Pick out a few books for the classroom library. A few boxes of crayons or markers may not seem that exciting to you, but most teachers I know will be thrilled not to have to buy them themselves!
