What Is Pilates?

Well, Joseph Pilates is the brilliant man from Germany who invented the exercises and who’s name we still use today.

Start Off With A Mat Class

In a mat class, you will be guided through every Pilates exercise and it won’t be easy, sorry. They are fun though. There is a particular order in which these exercises are taught. It’s like climbing a ladder of intensity by using your own weight and assisted by gravity.

Rolling like a ball
Seal
Crab
Jacknife
Teaser

Sounds like fun, right?

Don't Be Scared

I know, I know, sometimes these Pilates devices, or machines look like torture devices. They are not, I promise. If your body is tight in certain areas, then yes… it may feel like torture. BUT the more you do Pilates, the less you will feel like being tortured.

First Timer Pilates Tips

  1. Before you do ANY Pilates at home, please take a few classes somewhere! Get into your body so you can do it correctly.
  2. DON’T FORGET TO BREATHE!
  3. Find a Pilates studio that you feel comfortable at. For instance, teacher credibility, nice staff, cheap prices, and they don’t make you feel out of shape.
  4. Maybe there is a studio close to home.
  5. Wear comfortable clothes. Yoga pants, bare feet, and your favorite workout top. (Could just be a T-Shirt) no need to look sexy.
  6. It might be a good idea to start your lesson with a one on one lesson with your instructor. Especially if you’ve never taken Pilates before.
  7. Don’t be scared. You are already where you need to be to do Pilates. It’s all about retraining your body out of those nasty habits.

Props Are Fun!

There are so many props that can help assist you in various exercises. No, you can’t cheat! They are there to help you if ya need it.

I love using them to teach with, because if someone has tight hamstrings there are many props that can be used to help that person reach their goal of well… lengthened hamstrings. Make sense?

The Magic Circle

This is my favorite! It truly is a magic circle, because it can work your butt, inner thighs, arms, stretch out your calves, hamstrings, and more importantly, its such a simple design. It’s A CIRCLE! Who would have thought a circle could do so much!

Are ya tight? I have one of these at home that I pass out on when I come home from a long day. I just lay on it and stretch out my body, or roll out my tight muscles. Sounds fun right? It’s amazing, I promise.

A Brief History

Joseph Pilates developed exercises to help cure himself of various ailments, one of them being Polio. As it turns out, he DID cure himself. During WWI, Pilates helped rehabilitate soldiers with exercises now known as, the Pilates Method.

Later, he moved to NY and opened a studio that attracted dancers and performers and helped them recover for their next performances. It was such a hit that from then on, he dedicated his life to helping others explore their bodies’ full potential.

Oh, did I mention that the first Pilates ‘machine’ was made with bed springs he gathered during the war to rehabilitae those in the army.
Once again, pretty smart.

Pilates With The Twins- The Hundred

If You can’t make it to class, watch a video at home! This is the best one video out there from Pilates on Fifth in NYC. They are creepy red headed twins that know their stuff!

Advance to Apparatus

Once you feel comfortable with the mat exercises, climb up on one of those machines. It’s called a Reformer. This machine glides back and forth with springs attached at the end to add resistance. It’s a good time!

Don’t think you can still cheat though. No Way!

What do I wear? COMFORTABLE CLOTHING! It’s all about wearing comfy clothes that make you feel good about yourself. Pilates is not a practice that is meant to make you feel bad about yourself.

Go out and treat yourself to some nice pants before you begin. Sweat pants will work too, but I give you permission to go buy some more. Go on…
