I once sketched a congregation of men and women in business suits with flowers and plants for heads. This is what I observed during my lunch hour in a small park down in the Financial District when the weather was just right; everyone needed to escape their florescent cubicles in search of a sunny spot all their own. This guide is here to help them find it.
Bryant Park Summer Film Festival. Speaking of Sun, I saw “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid” here.
World Wide Plaza is where I go when I want to sip my Coffee Pot iced coffee and catch some rays, or have a burrito and a margarita at Blockheads. Outdoor seating is available to wanderers, passers by and suits who are all here for the same reason: Vitamin D.
Is having a drink with lunch during a workday acceptable? Well, maybe in Europe…
“Greenacre is the place to be..” Featuring a waterfall and movable chairs, Greenacre Park is one of Midtown East’s gems. Teeming with ties and tourists ambling by, this is where to rest your weary bones after shopping ‘til you almost dropped at French Connection or just to eat a burger away from your pesky new assistant who won’t stop asking you questions.

Paley Park
3 East 53rd St. New York, NY 10022
If Greenacre Park is too full, try Paley park not far. Also featuring a waterfall, Paley park is where you can grab a hot dog or bring your own tupperware-packed macrobiotic lunch and add some freckles to your face.
Have a seat on the steps and bow to Apollo. Having a greasy slice of pepperoni pizza here will be much more satisfying than trying to anchor a plastic chair amidst a sea of blue-shirted businessmen. Just be sure to find a clean spot – especially if that skirt or pair of khakis just returned from the dry cleaners.

We salute you, too, Bob. Hey, could you push over just a bit? I think this is ketchup…
Christopher Park
Christopher Street New York , NY 10014
If the benches at Christopher Park were good enough for Bob Dylan’s bones, then they’re good enough for you, toots. Cross your legs like a rock star and enjoy the eclectic mix of faces the pass you by. The Mud Coffee truck will most likely be parked nearby for a midday pick-me-up; maybe you’ll even be inspired to write a song of your own.
Central Park South and now the small park that has sprung up in the midst of Columbus Circle are great places to grab a Whole Foods meal to go and sit and soak up some rays in the middle of a work day. You may compete with youths wielding skateboards and pedicab drivers, but if you can find the right bench and hold it down, you might be able to get the beginning of a tan by 1:00.

Skateboarders in Columbus Circle? What is this Union Square North? Yeesh.
In addition to hosting some great summer events, Bryant Park is also the place to go for corporate types in Midtown who are not interested in eating at one of the many glorified school cafeterias that pepper business-heavy blocks in Manhattan. Space is always competitive, so try to steal away at an off hour if at all possible.

Bowling Green Park
Broadway and Whitehall St. New York, NY 10004
Just south of Wall Street and the Bull on Broadway, this tiny park attracts government workers and stock brokers alike with Au Bon Pain and Subway bags. Bring your sunglasses and enjoy the view of the water and the smell of commerce and egg salad in the air.
This is where you go for an extended break. Maybe you’ve just delivered a mediocre Power Point Presentation to potential investors, or maybe you’re at a “doctor’s appointment”, but be sure you have a minimum of one hour to spend here. Have a seat in the outdoor area and allow yourself to entertain the idea of fried food.

What couldn’t Apollo do? Maybe it was all that sun he got…grab your own sun and a sandwich in New York City and you’re sure to loathe your office chair a little less when you get back up to the 8th floor.
Riverside Park in the West 70s is an excellent place for anyone working on Broadway to disappear to for a quick brown-bagged lunch. You could explore the Promenade, find a dry spot of green, or sit on the bleachers by the soccer field. Just keep that delicious pasta salad away from drooling dogs and potentially rabid squirrels.

Lincoln Square
West 66th Street and Broadway New York, NY 10023
In the median between Broadway and Columbus Avenues is a cobblestoned area with green outdoor tables and chairs for the weary subway traveler, rogue Julliard student, or ABC News employee to enjoy life in the lunch lane.
Look away, Timmy!
East River Esplanade
East 37th Street ad Murray Hill New York, NY 10016
Those lucky residents of Murray Hill (even the ones who don’t have a key to Gramercy Park) also have access to the East River Esplanade. It might be a bit of hike for most workers, but a lovely spot to pass a noontime hour.
Sunny Lunch in New York City
The best places to sit outside to enjoy your lunch in the middle of workday. Keep your chin up, but remember what Ma said “Never look directly into the Sun, honey.”
