Morbid Tourism: Phil Spector
After 6 years and a mistrial ending in hung jury, Phil Spector has finally been convicted of 2nd degree murder in the death of actress Lana Clarkson. Along with the glamorous photo shoot afforded him (see guide icon), he now gets to join the long illustrious list of infamous L.A. murders and gets his own Morbid Tourism guide from yours truly!
Phil Spector’s first band was called The Teddy Bears and consisted of Spector and 3 friends from Fairfax High School. In 1958, their single “To Know Him is to Love Him” went to #1 with Spector on guitar.
Wall of Sound
As a record producer, where he found his greatest success, Spector’s trademark was his so-called “Wall of Sound.” According to wikipedia, this is “a production technique yielding a dense, layered effect that reproduced well on AM radio and jukeboxes.”

Pyrenees Castle
1700 S Grandview Dr Alhambra, CA 91770
This Alhambra mansion was built in 1926 by sheep farmer Sylvester Dupuy. Originally built for $250,000, the “castle” has walls that are three feet thick, 10 bedrooms and 8 bathrooms. Until his arrest, Phil Spector was living here and it was in the foyer to this home that Lana Clarkson’s body was found on February 3, 2003.
Spector was quoted in Esquire saying of the house, “I’ve bought myself a beautiful and enchanting castle in a hick town where there is no place to go that you shouldn’t.” Well, I guess he probably should have stayed in Alhambra…
An article detailing the night Clarkson was killed.
Phil Spector is responsible for producing and co-writing The Righteous Brothers’ “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feeling” which BMI distinguishes as the song with the most U.S. airplay in the 20th century. I guess that was before Lady GaGa made the scene.
On the night of the murder, Spector had a late dinner at this West Hollywood landmark. He left a $500 tip on a $55 check. It was after this dinner, where he was accompanied by another woman, that Spector went to the House of Blues and met up with Lana Clarkson.

Dan Tana's
Spector’s regular table was #4
After his dinner at Dan Tana, Spector visited the House of Blues on the Sunset Strip where Lana Clarkson, 40, was working as a hostess. She agreed to accompany him home and sometime around 5 AM, Spector emerged from his house and announced to his driver “I think I may have killed someone.”
