Who's Your Personal Hero?

We all have heroes. The people we look to for wisdom, direction, and inspiration. So of them are personal, others ones that everybody loves. So, who're yours?

Luke Skywalker

Empire Strikes Back is one of my favorite movies, and Luke was probably my imaginary best friend until – give-or-take – a year ago. It would be naive for me to think that I was the only kid born between 1971 and 1987 who thought Skywalker was awesome, but I still like to pretend anyway.

Steve Martin

Steve Martin embodies a fearlessness in comedy that I think the vast majority of us are still a little afraid to follow. Martin was a performer before a writer and he’s probably one of the greatest modern students of comedy in a very long time. He wasn’t ever silly just to be silly. He tested his audiences, made them listen, and turned stand-up comedy into comedy theater in the process.

Matthew Quick

He’s the author of the novel The Silver Linings Playbook. Matt’s done some amazing things with his life, like giving up the security of teaching to become a novelist. He’s traveled all over the world and soul-searched to the bottom of his being to finally write a really great novel. Why does any of that matter? Because he was also my high school English teacher.

Barack Obama

Not going to lie: I’m crushing hard on our President-Elect. It’s not just the flash anymore. Obama embodies the American spirit and the American Dream. He’s someone who has fought for everything he’s accomplished and done it with integrity, respect, and dignity. Even if he goes on to be a less than stellar President, I still think there’s a lot to be learned from his life story.

Tina Fey

On the same page with Martin in my book, except she decided to be a writer first, and a performer second. Her comedy embodies a willingness to take human vulnerabilities, put them out in front of America, and not apologize for any of them. It’s not only gutsy, but completely hilarious.
