The Perfect Get-Outta-Boston Day Trip: Marblehead, Massachusetts

Drive only about 15 miles north of Boston and you will hit the adorable, quaint town of Marblehead and feel totally transported. Million-dollar yachts combined with colonial buidlings, narrow roads, and amazing coastline views make Marblehead a must-visit and the perfect destination for a day trip. We fell in love with this town, moved there, stayed for over 2 years, and cried when we had to leave.
So pick a lovely sunny day and head into Marblehead. Though there are a ton of great places to eat and see, I've created a day where you can park your car once and spend the day hitting some great places on foot. So put on your most comfortable walking shoes, print out this guide, and be on your merry way.

7:30 a.m.: Hit the Road
Wake up early, grab some coffee, and hit the road. Marblehead is awaiting your curious eyes and will not disappoint.
Once you enter Marblehead, your first must-do is to take a drive around Marblehead Neck. Gawk at the mansions with their billion-dollar views, and drive to the tippity-top of the neck to check out Marblehead Light and get a good look at the town on which you’re about to embark.
A view of Abbot Hall from Marblehead Neck. The people who live on the Neck are so rich, everything they look at is framed in flowers. No, seriously.
At the top of the Neck is Marblehead Light, which resides in Chandler Hovey Park.
8:30 a.m.: Park The Car And Grab Breakfast
After your jaunt around the Neck, make your way into downtown Marblehead, known as Old Town. Here’s a tip: Park anywhere on Washington Street and leave your car there for the day. Everything I’ve got you set up to see and do is accessible via foot, so you won’t need to worry about finding parking throughout the day.

Saddle up to the bar (or anywhere you can get a seat) in this tiny fisherman’s shack and get ready for a tasty, no-frills breakfast to fuel your day. The Mexican omlette is spicy and to DIE for, and be sure to leave with a paper bag of fried dough.

9:30 a.m.: Take The Scenic Route
Walk off your breakfast with a stroll up to Crocker Park. The views of the harbor (and, depending on the time of year, the hundreds of boats moored) are outstanding and you’ll want to linger for a bit before moving on.

Take a left out of the Driftwood, and Crocker Park is just a quick walk down Front Street.
10 a.m.: Time For A History Lesson
Marblehead was settled in 1629, which means that there is a ton of history throughout this little seaside town. So, while you’re chipper and alert and not clouded by alcohol, get the touristy stuff out of the way first.
The famed Spirt of ‘76 painting.
Abbot Hall
188 Washington St Marblehead, MA 01945
Abbot Hall is an absolute must-visit, if only to see one thing: the original Spirit of ‘76 painting located in the Reading Room. Listen to the story behind this amazing piece and you’ll have a whole new appreciation for it.
For only five bucks, take a guided tour through the eighteen furnished rooms of this mansion built in 1768. The coolest part? Seeing ultra-rare, hand-painted 18th century wallpapers.

This no-frills joint has hands down the best Bloody Mary in town…and the coldest, freshest beers on the North Shore. (Trust me. We’ve done exhaustive research on this.) The Barnacle is known for their seafood, so break your diet and indulge in some fried goodness. Or, enjoy some chowder and an appetizer.

1 p.m.: Soak In Another Incredible View
After lunch, stroll on up to Fort Sewell. The views of this historic fort are breathtaking and the vibe is a bit haunting. Sit on a bench, look across the ocean, and relax for a bit.
The amazing view from Fort Sewell.
From the Barnacle, take a right and walk up the hill, hugging the coastline, to Fort Sewell.
1:45 p.m.: Browse The Cute Shops
Washington Street in Old Town is lined with great little shops and galleries for your browsing pleasure. Here are my favorites.
She carries the perfect mix of well-selected goods, and will no doubt have something you’ll love: casual clothes from of-the-moment designers, non-mainstream beauty products, and unique gift items. All displayed lovingly in a cute corner shop.

I’ll start by saying that entering Scribe gives me butterflies. Scribe is stocked to the gills with fabulous paper products like totally unique and hip cards, super-cool wrappings, and incredibly awesome gifts like stationery, calendars, and little books. You will – and I mean it – leave with something adorable and wish you had a place like this near you.

The creaking floors and low ceilings of Shipshape cause you to walk slowly through the store. But you’re also doing that because it’s crammed full of gifty goodies that reflect the seaside flavor of this town. Lovely home accessories, interesting nautical-themed books, and great kitchen knick-knacks abound.

How can you NOT go into a bar named one of the top sailing bars in the world? Maddie’s is a cult favorite, so do it. The atmosphere is dark, the locals are rough, but the drinks are insanely strong. And patrons would have it no other way.

We used to practically live at this place. A stone’s throw from our apartment, this was our haunt and we loved every visit. The main dining room is a little fancy, so seat yourself anywhere in the bar area for consistently good American pub food and live music after 8 pm. And tell Colin and Shane we said hello.

7:30 p.m.: Arrive Home And Figure Out How To Move There
Really, you’ll want to. Marblehead is a special town with incredible history, amazing views, a great sense of community, and – it just so happens – fantastic bars.
Real Estate is pricey here, and if you live in Old Town (THE place to be) you’ll sacrifice a yard and possibly parking for a coveted location. More affordable options are found the further away from town you go. And don’t worry – if you’re not ready to buy, tons of rental opportunities abound.
