Patient care technicians, or PCTs, work under the supervision of physicians and registered nurses to assist patients with tasks they may not be able to do for themselves while they are staying in hospitals, assisted living facilities, and rehabilitation centers. PCTs oftentimes play a critical role in the delivery of patient care, since they are likely to have more contact with patients than any other member of the health care team. Those interested in becoming a patient care technician must first complete a 6 month program, which are offered through Sunshine Career Institute Inc. Here they will receive instruction related to patient care, communication skills, medical safety, infection control, health care terminology, nutrition, anatomy, CPR, and vital signs.  The employment rate for patient care technicians has increased significantly in recent years as an increasing number of nursing duties are now being performed by PCTs. Job prospects for those entering the field are expected to increase rapidly through the year 2014.
