Indian restaurants are notorious for their frequent changes in management, which eventually get translated into changes of menu quality. Sadly, this means that some of our favorite Indian restaurants are no longer the tasty curry houses they once were (cough, Electric Karma, cough). But don't fret! There are still many chutneys, tikkas, and naans out there that are worth the tasting.

How about a side of Bollywood with your aloo gobi?

Ambala Dhaba Homestyle

1781 Westwood Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90024

Unlike most other Indian restaurants out there, Ambala serves goat (try the goat curry!) in addition to your standard chicken and lamb—don’t worry, goat tastes VERY similar to beef. The atmosphere is dark, moody, and slightly rustic (but in a good way), so it’s a good place for a date (wink, wink).

Taj Mahal

17815 Ventura Blvd, Encino, CA 91316

Taj Mahal is located in a rather ‘80s-looking mini-mall in the Valley. But don’t let that stop you by any means! While the atmosphere leaves something to be desired, the food does not. The vast menu promises delicious breads, savory meats and chicken, and tasty appetizers (oh, the pakoras!)

Chutneys

2406 S BARRINGTON AVE LOS ANGELES, CA 90064

Chutneys is self-described Indian fast food, but don’t be put off if you’re the type of person who cringes at the sight of McDonald’s. The prices might be cheap, but the quality doesn’t suffer here (but don’t come expecting classy decor— this place is good for take-out and cheap lunch specials). Plus, Chutneys also offer some Pakistani options like nehari (a beef dish), which you won’t find at any Indian restaurants.

Paru's Indian Vegetarian Restaurant

5140 W SUNSET BLVD LOS ANGELES, CA 90027

Paru’s claims to be the oldest Indian restaurant in LA. But don’t come here expecting chicken tikka masala and lamb vindaloo. Paru’s is vegetarian AND South Indian. Paru’s offers masala dosas (large, delicious pancakes) and all kinds of curries so you won’t even miss the meat.

Lal Mirch

11138 Ventura Blvd, Studio City, CA 91604

Lal Mirch serves standard Indian food: chicken tikka masala, chicken khorma, sag paneer, garlic naan, etc… Start with the vegetarian samosas then go for the chicken tikka masala (juicy and tender) or the lamb vindaloo. And don’t forget to save room for the mango lassi. N.B. This restaurant uses a heavy hand with the spices, so be prepared if you order something described as “spicy.”

India Sweets & Spices

9409 Venice Blvd, Culver City, CA 90232

This no-frills chain serves up some of the best Indian food in the LA area. The food is cheap, vegetarian, and authentic. If you’re not fussy, you can eat in the one of the spartan restaurants/markets, or you can take it away and eat on your couch while you watch a Bollywood movie. Get some bread, basmati rice, veggies, lentils, and a mango lassi, and you’ll be good to go.

Samosa House

11510 Washington Blvd, Whittier, CA 90606

Samosa House rivals India Sweets and Spices as the cheap, yet tasty king of vegetarian Indian food. SH lives up to its name, and the samosas are tops. But don’t stop at the samosas, there are combo plates to be had! So grab a fork and start eating those mouthwatering curries.

Ugh – I was going to say Electric Lotus! You beat me to it, Blushing Whale. Love their cocktails and cozy booths. (It’s on Vermont, though).
