Rock climbing, hiking and huckleberries...what do they have in common? Smith Rock! Smith Rock is located in Central Oregon. It is incredible to look at and even more fun to climb (or hike). At your journey's end, you must stop at the Rock Climber's Store and Cafe and get yourself some wild huckleberry ice cream! Just remember, one scoop is not enough!
You have to watch this! It is sick!! It’s not climbing in Oregon, but it’s definitely worth freaking you out! A climber video’s his walk. This is a walkway which was originally built in 1901, it now serves as an approach to makinodromo, the famous climbing sector of El Chorro in Spain.
Smith Rock in Central Oregon
Smith Rock which is on the Crooked River can be seen from much of Central Oregon. Smith Rock is a great place for rock climbers who come from all over the world to climb the vertical cliffs. We of course, chose to hike the trails at Smith Rock rather than climb it!
The State Park has nice spots to park your butt and get a great birds eye view of the rock climbers. A trail leads down to the river where it meets the base of the cliffs, and this is where the climbers begin their journey! So for a while you can actually look down at the climbers until they move their way up the precipice!
We decided on hiking as to keep me from having a heart attack due to sheer fears of standing on a cliff. There are many hiking trails to wander about on. My brother just had to take us off the trail and get my blood pumping and my adrenaline flowing…I won’t be doing that again any time soon! I don’t much enjoy getting the crap scared out of me!
To treat yourself for a job well done after hiking or climbing, you have to stop at the Rock Climber’s Store and Cafe on the way out of the park for their famous Huckleberry Ice Cream…oh yeah baby!!! Plan on two cones as one just won’t satisfy you! Check out Leigh’s guide on Oregon Berries!
