OCD Project #1 - Basic Tiling
This guide will give you a basic lesson on a small tiling project. The project is the tiling of a single step, which of course was done by the O.C.D. Goddess! I'm good and you can be too!
Before
This is the before picture of the ugly cement step.
Items Needed
- Thinset
- Drill
- Mortar Mixer Paddle
- Bucket
- Notched Trowel
- Tiles
- Grout
- Grout Float
- Tiling Sponges
- Water
Step 5.
Placing tiles with spacers and making sure it’s all level.
Spacers are removed and tiles are wiped clean with a sponge and are ready for grouting.
After
This is the after picture of the now “pretty” tiled step.
Steps
- Mix Thinset in a bucket. Follow directions on bag. Basically you put a small amount of water to thinset and mix with your drill until desired consistency..a nice paste.
- Figure how to lay out your tile (where you want cuts and whole tiles). You can use a horizontal line for guides.
- Using your notched trowel, spread mortar on cement over a small area (not the whole thing at once). After spreading on with the flat side, run the notched side through mortar to get nice even lines.
- Place first tile on mortar (watching your guidelines), slightly pressing and twisting the tile into place. Remove this tile to make sure you have good coverage (at least 70%). Proceed with tiling using spacers to assure straight grout lines.
- Cut and place tiles as needed.
- When all tiles are laid, let dry overnight.
- Mix grout as you did with mortar to a nice consistency, like a thin paste.
- Spread on grout with grout float, pressing grout into grout lines. Keeping the float at a 45 degree angle will help.
- Remove excess grout with float.
- Get your sponge wet and wring out, then wipe tile including grout. This will smooth out the grout lines and remove the grout from the tile. Repeat this process until grout is uniform and tiles are clean.
Enjoy your finish product!
