Nothing's Quite Like Harvey Mudd

Finding the right college is hard, especially for the highly talented and highly motivated. Harvey Mudd is one of the country's top liberal arts colleges for those with a scientific or mathematical bent. Here's a quick guide to the social aspects of Harvey Mudd student life. Disclaimer: I didn't go here for school - my sister did, I just went to visit and got her input on what's stated here.
Transportation Around Town
Cars
Somewhere between 30 and 40 percent of Harvey Mudd students have a car. By quick calculation… 800 students, times .3… anyways, the point is students know somebody with a car. It’s fairly easy to bum a ride to the airport or to the grocery, just try to plan ahead.
You Can Get There By Bike
No car? Can’t bum a ride? Here are a number of shops you can reach on foot, or preferably by bicycle. They’ll do for most needs during the school year.
Within easy biking distance, or even walking distance, from campus, Vons is popular for general grocery needs.

Food On Campus
Never fear, Harvey Mudd provides plenty of dining options around the campus itself. The dining hall has excellent fare for all students, and some of the dorms are equipped with kitchens for cooking. Late night diners can stop by Jay’s Place, which has food like pizzas and sub sandwiches and activities including billiards and movies.
Around the Claremont Colleges complex, students can get late night food from The Coop Fountain on Pomona’s campus or snacks from The Hub at Claremont McKenna College.
Any student at any of the Claremont colleges with a meal plan can eat at any dining hall within the colleges. Students are not limited to eating at only places run by their own school.
Enrollment Statistics
Despite having a historically large male population, the ratio of men to women at Harvey Mudd has slowly shifted closer towards 1:1.
Number of men to women:
Class of 2011: 109 to 84
Class of 2010: 131 to 40
Class of 2009: 110 to 66
A taxi to or from Ontario International Airport will cost somewhere between $20 and $30 in total. Try splitting the cost with a few friends who have flights at about the same time.

Accessorizing Outdoors
Students take a peculiar pride in their ability to decorate. Not like feng shui, more like “what the…?” On my visit, we were treated to sights of exterior decoration including a row of eight hanging toilet seats, a giant “WE QUIT” banner and a collapsed inflatable hot tub.
Outdoor Furniture
Don’t get me wrong, I don’t mean furniture meant for the outdoors. I mean furniture that, manufacturer intended or not, has found its home outside one of the Harvey Mudd dorms. This includes small hordes of couches, tables, bars and grills, both lining the walls on the ground floor and scattered everywhere on upper floor balconies. Taking advantage of the relatively dry climate, these furnishings are left outdoors day and night without cover.
Campus Rules - A Quick Reference
Fires
Fires shall take place outdoors.
Flames shall not reach more than two stories in height.
Fuel shall not stand more than six feet high.
Climbing Buildings
It’s a really bad idea. Warts (those square things sticking invitingly off the walls of most campus buildings) are sometimes just held on with glue. This means that they fall off, and so do you if you’re on them.
Don’t even think about climbing on roofs, administration gets pretty cranky about that.
Pranking
A tradition at Harvey-Mudd is the carrying out of elaborate and unique practical jokes, called “pranking.” This is done for fun, not out of a sense of cruelty, and is widely enjoyed, with the most impressive pranks passed on in word from year to year. A few guidelines:
- Participants, both running the prank and on the receiving end, must not be on the “No Prank” list.
- Pranks must be reversible within 24 hours.
- Pranks cannot involve items necessary to class work (such as laptops) if it will render the item useless or missing.
