Drink Up, Los Angeles

3456290722400

Don't get me wrong, I am ALL for drinking alcohol (I mean ALL for it,) but when summer decides to do its thing in Los Angeles, staying hydrated is pretty important. And since you can't be drunk ALL the time, it's sort of good to know what kinds of non-alcoholic beverages are out there for the drinking. Plus, you can only drink SO many ice blendeds from the Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf. Unless you're Ashley Tisdale or something.

My Favorite Non-Alcoholic Drinks:

Watermelon Juice

I know, I’ve already talked about this, but I just couldn’t restrain myself…

Mint Lemonade

Widget_d5thmh2xxbv5fmh8xitrz9

I first had this in an Israeli restaurant in Berkeley, CA, and I haven’t wanted to drink plain lemonade since!

Italian Blood Orange Soda

Widget_bijlgqkbtptqf9qp2erwc1

I’ve never been a big fan of carbonated drinks, but this stuff is totally delicious. Not too sweet, and not too tart…

Ginger Limeade

Widget_cenmcdxuhj3rvqr6zpm5qn

They sell ginger limeade at Trader Joe’s, but it’s a little on the sweet side. One day I’ll make my own…

Ginger Beer

I’ve already asserted my maniacal love of ginger, so I don’t think I really need to explain why this is on here…

Honest Tea

I used to drink this stuff like a crazy person! And while I’ve calmed down a bit (probably a result of cutting back on the caffeine—funny how that happens,) I still love the honey green tea flavor.

Orange Cream Soda

This another exception to my no carbonation rule…Thomas Kemper makes a GREAT one.

Kombucha

I haven’t had it in a while, but I definitely went through a Kombucha phase— it’s an acquired taste FOR SURE. And since it’s fermented, it’s ever so slightly alcoholic so it gives you a SLIGHT buzz. P.S. I’m a fan of the strawberry flavor.

Orangina

I love drinking Orangina because it makes me feel like I’m on a European vacation.

Thirsty? In Los Angeles?

I know I am!

Locali

5825 Franklin Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90028

After reading about this place in the LA Times I was like I need to check this out (it’s a organic/vegetarian-friendly upscale convenience store that sells sandwiches, salads, as well as beer, wine, prepackaged foods, cleaning supplies, etc…) But what really made me want to come here are the ginger slushies— I’m a ginger fanatic. When I went I had the peach and cherry flavors and both were tasty— although be forewarned these are not for the weak of palate, the ginger is STRONG.

The counter at Locali where the magic happens (or where the ginger slushies come from).

Millions of Milkshakes

8910 Santa Monica Blvd, West Hollywood, CA 90069

Words really don’t do justice to this place. It’s a kind of weird celebrity machine— all the milkshakes are named after “celebs” (I use quotes only because Perez Hilton and Heidi and Spencer have drinks named after them). But even despite the ridiculous naming conventions, I wouldn’t be adverse to trying the David Beckham (which has banana and Nutella in it).

Lindsay Lohan

Lindsay Lohan with her namesake milkshake. Hmm, do you think there’s also crack in it?

Milk

7290 Beverly Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90036

This paean to all things delicious and dairy sells all kinds of ice cream concoctions, which naturally includes milkshakes. But if you’re not sure you can stomach all that dairy then you can also settle for a float or an ice-blended (banana mocha, Thai tea. green tea and Dulce de Leche are just a couple flavors available).

The only thing I miss about not living near the Grove anymore, is living within walking distance of Loteria— I love this place. And not just for their tacos, but also for their agua fresca! You seriously can’t go wrong with watermelon agua fresca, EVER.

The taco sampler and a watermelon agua fresca. I would seriously consider having this as a my last meal.

Lemonade On Beverly

9001 Beverly Blvd, West Hollywood, CA 90048

Lemonade is an upscale deli type place (think Joan’s on Third), but what this place is really known for is its homemade lemonade (naturally). They offer regular old lemonade, as well as some fruity flavors like blueberry mint and cucumber mint.

The Golden State

426 N Fairfax Ave, Los Angeles CA 90036

This place is being talked about for its burger and it’s beer floats (that’s right a float that’s made with REAL beer.) But since this is an non-alcoholic beverage guide, I’m going to talk up the root beer—which they have on tap! They’ll also make you a root beer with Scoops ice cream!!

Eple

6333 W 3rd St, Los Angeles, CA 90036

Have you ever wondered what would happen if Pinkberry opened up a fruit stand? Well wonder no longer, because Eple is here to answer the question. Located in the Original Farmer’s Market at 3rd and Fairfax this place offers up all kinds of interesting fruit-based concoctions— including watermelon-mint and peach-mango juices.
