Any one who knows me knows that Nick Drake is one of my all-time favorite singers. In tribute to him, I've decided to make this guide to his life and music.

About Nick Drake

Nick Drake was born on June 19, 1948 in Burma, where his upper-middle-class English parents were stationed at the time.  He only recorded three albums—Five Leaves Left, Bryter Layter, and Pink Moon.  None of which did well commercially, and Drake (who, I think, always had depressive tendencies) fell into a deep depression.  He tragically died in 1974 at the age of 26 of an overdose of antidepressants.  Although most people say it was suicide, Drake’s family insist it was just an accident.

From Five Leaves Left

Drake’s second album is a bit overproduced, with backing singers, a full band, and a string section all at once on some tracks. But contains some of my favorite songs, such as “At the Chime of a City Clock,” “Fly,” and the romantic “Northern Sky.”

Northern Sky

From Bryter Layter Trivia: John Cale plays on this track as well as “Fly.”

The "Pink Moon" VW commercial

Remember this commercial from 2000? That’s how I first heard about Drake.

Made to Love Magic (2004)

One of the many posthumous Drake compilations, this includes songs that didn’t make it onto his albums and demos of songs like “River Man” and “Three Hours.”

Black Eyed Dog

Recorded after Pink Moon, but not released until years later.

Five Leaves Left (1969)

Drake was still a college student when he recorded his first album. Five Leaves Left is a lush, pastoral album with string accompaniment on tracks like “Fruit Tree,” “Way to Blue,” and “River Man.”

Fly

From Bryter Layter. You might remember this song from the movie The Royal Tannenbaums.

Pink Moon (1972)

Drake’s best and final album. Unlike the previous two albums, it’s just him and his guitar (and little piano overdub on the title track). This album is raw, fragile, and heartbreakingly beautiful. At 28 minutes, it’s too short, just like Drake’s life.

Time of No Reply

Recorded around the same time Five Leaves Left was produced. The version of Made to Love Magic includes a backing orchestra.

Nick Drake on film?

One of the strangest things about Drake is that there are no videos or film clips of him as an adult. That is, until this hit YouTube a year or so ago. There’s a good chance that this really is Nick. From what I’ve read about him, he was a fairly tall man, and he always wore jackets and trousers. But we’ll never know for sure, I guess. If it is him, this film clip is quite haunting, like seeing a ghost.

I am a huge Nick Drake fan. Have you heard his cover of Dylan’s “don’t think twice it’s alright”? Soooooooooooo good.

I read the biography by Patrick Humphries about 10 years ago (before the Volkswagen commercial) and have since bought about a dozen copies to hand out to friends. Drake is a fascinating study in music, songwriting and human behavior. http://tinyurl.com/9b8v49
