Hot dogs weren't exactly invented here, but they do hold a lot of significance for New York residents, and certain hot dog myths continue to perpetuate about this peculiar beef and/or pork treat. Most of us probably don't even want to know what literally goes into a hot dog because it would ruin every subsequent baseball game and barbecue. Ignorance is hot dog bliss! Regardless, eating a hot dog while in New York is like eating pulled pork in Carolina--you have to do it!
Hot Dog History in New York
Gather ‘round, kiddies, it’s time for Teacher Alicia to tell you about hot dog history because you couldn’t possibly enjoy something without knowing its origins, could you? (Wait, is that just me? Hmm) Basically, we stole the concept from Europe, where they refer to hot dogs as sausages or frankfurters.
In 1870, a German immigrant sold the delicacies in Coney Island, home of the future Nathan’s, of course. Because New Yorkers like to believe they created EVERYTHING, there is a myth that the term “hot dog” originated in a New York newspaper cartoon, even though usage was printed elsewhere and earlier. The plot thickens…
But who cares, because hot dogs are tasty!

A nickel hot dog stand morphed into a nationwide chain, but it all started here in Coney Island. There are two Nathan’s actually, one on the boardwalk and one further down on Surf Avenue. Both usually have lines, but they serve up the same glistening dogs with that special “Coney sauce.”

I find this contest a little gross, but I can’t resist watching it all the same. This video is hilarious as it shows a wide swatch of America, in all its glory and sadness. The best quote is definitely the guy who says he came to the hot dog-eating contest because, “You gotta root for America.”

Unlucky enough to not live near a Nathan’s outpost? (You probably do…they are everywhere!) Order hot dogs and accompanying gear online. Buying hot dogs online might be where I finally put my foot down and say “no” to the convenience of the internet.
Gray's Papaya
My first hot dog experience in New York, I think, was at Gray’s Papaya. Maybe they haven’t turned into a giant chain, but Gray’s Papaya is a New York institution and shows up in many movies.
The three locations always feel stuffy inside, but the dangling fruit decorations make up for it. It’s cheap, fast, and you can order a variety of fruit shakes, which somehow go well with steaming hot dogs. Who knew!

Say it ain’t so! The New York Times, an authority on practically everything (tongue…in…cheek) says that Halal food carts are rapidly taking over the hot dog vendors. One of the former cart owners says, perhaps blasphemously of his hot dog-peddling roots, “Hot dog is not a meal.” There you have it, folks.

I lived at Gray’s last winter. I was running late to a show in The Village and I stopped at Willie’s on the way to the F. The guy knows me there and my order; I don’t know if that’s a good thing.
