The Informed New Yorker's Guide

When the great Dog and Pony Shows, otherwise known as "election campaigns" draws to a close, New York City voters will teem into schools, community centers, and Boards of Election to decide which candidate has touched their hearts, minds, and purse strings. But how were their decisions formed, by which sources, and what will they eat for lunch after they cast their vote? And furthermore, how did they arrive at the decision to eat at that place? For the New Yorker who knows when to pack a hideous pair of galoshes for the rush hour storm, this guide's for you.

The New York Times Company

620 Eighth Avenue New York, NY 10018

The New York Times decided they needed a shiny new building and that its readers probably wouldn’t mind shelling out a couple more quarters per daily paper in order to pay for it. The paper itself is cosmopolitan, high brow, and appropriately left-leaning. Apparently, the new building is perfectly vertical and also well-suited for climbing.

Time Out New York

475 10th Ave, New York, NY 10018

This Guidespotter once wrote a letter to the editor about a certain misrepresentation of her neighborhood. The letter was published and dubbed “Anti-Bohemian Rhapsody”…if only that editor could see the inside of my refrigerator. Generally, however, Time Out is recognized the world over as the source for what to see and do around the city, celebrating a diverse populace and range of pocketbook breadth.

My neighborhood isn’t “soulless” as one Time Out New York writer ventured to posit. White folks got soul; just a different kind. (See above)

Universal News & Cafe Inc

484 Broadway Frnt 1, New York, NY 10013

To get a glimpse of headlines in a dozen languages, catch up on The Atlantic Monthly, The Economist, Foreign Affairs, or New York Magazine. Sure, if you are a New Yorker you should know what’s going on in your own back yard, but it is a pretty crowded back yard. And nothing goes better with a fist full of news than a cup of tea or coffee and a baked good. Even if the headlines are less-than-sweet, your muffin should consistently deliver.

The New York Post

1211 Avenue of the Americas New York, NY 10036

From Alexander Hamilton, the man that brought you The Federalist Papers and The United States Constitution, comes The New York Post, one of the nation’s oldest daily papers. With headlines beginning with such creative interpretations of English as “Prez Sez”, you’d be hard-pressed to find a foreign tourist on the subway who could decipher its meaning. Also home to Page Six, a smattering of daily gossip from Cindy Adams, Liz Smith and company.

"This is Christiane Amanpour, reporting live from..."

Widget_dlfhrmc9xmzajxulnfg7w5

Christiane Amanpour could recite her name over and over and this Guidespotter is convinced that that would make for more entertaining television than most of the major networks’ lineups. Informed New Yorkers can catch the daring journalista on CNN, BBC-America, and in network specials such as “God’s Warriors”.

Netzone Internet Cafe

28 W 32nd St, New York, NY 10001

Perched on the fifth floor of a West 32nd Street building, customers might feel at first as though they’re on a fool’s errand, but this simple and relatively inexpensive internet cafe is less overwhelming than mammoths such as The Easy Internet Cafe on 42nd street. Informed New Yorkers and visitors can sip their beverage of choice while checking their e-mail, researching, and catching up on the latest campaign and extreme weather news online.

Rockefeller Group the Business Centers

Forget Google. Handy things can be learned if one is willing to rise and shine and get themselves down to the live taping of The Today Show at 7 a.m. And if audience members think they’re just in for winks and fluff pieces, may they be reminded that Katie Couric was once the one winking and delivering those fluff pieces. And look at her now.

The new Times building itself doesn’t lean either way.

If you’re a New Yorker passing through Times Square, you might never bother to look up. But if you’re interested in the time, the weather, the headlines, that’s all you need do at One Times Square. But don’t blink in the City That Never Sleeps; the ticker waits for no one.

Fox News Channel Studios

1211 Avenue of the Americas New York, NY 10036

With the exception of Bill Kristol (political commentator, not City Slicker, Billy Crystal), Fox News seems to me to be hijacked by transvestites and aliens. Sometimes the only alternative voice in a mass sea of liberal media, the network doesn’t suffer the slant so much as the delivery. This Guidespotter feels as though she’s in the throes of an epileptic seizure with broadcast news graphics and music these days. Nonetheless, Fox News Channel Studios does host a live studio audience.

MTA: More time on subway lines, less time on headlines, please?

Widget_cbhmebmoxbspuvodxir4hd

The MTA’s own free daily, Metro and AM New York battle it out for which paper will end up causing some poor, news-thirsty commuter to spill his/her coffee on the subway ride to work.

The OTHER free daily

The McLaughlin Group

“For over two decades, the sharpest minds…” Just watch the video and judge for yourself.
Informed New Yorkers can learn a lot from our elders, and the McLaughlin group is one way to stay in touch with a smoldering generation of political commentators. New Yorkers, you can catch Mort Zuckerman and his round table on WCBS, Sundays at 11 a.m.

Fog

The fog comes
on little cat feet

It sits looking
over city and harbor
on silent haunches
and then moves on

The name's Aubree. I'm a New England-Yorker, writer/editor, and a day trip enthusiast. In my humble opinion, the best "bang-for-your-buck" day trip in the metro NYC area is a train trip to Sleepy Hollow. (In the Fall, of course.) -@
