To Wii, Or Not To Wii?

This guide might be a wii-bit too late, but just in case you haven't started a collection of Wii games, I thought I might highlight some of my favorites and other games that have been recommended to me. Want to know where you can play the Wii in Chicago? I've thrown in a few bars that have video game nights. Now, not only can you make a drunken fool of yourself, you can do it while playing Rock Band.

EA Active

I bought EA Active because it seemed cheaper than joining a gym and securing a personal trainer. The virtual trainer I get with this game only cost me $60. It’s definitely not something I would play with friends; it’s much more of a solitary game. But I love that even a 30 minute workout breaks a sweat. It includes cardio, resistance training, and lunges and squats galore!

Wii Fit

Widget_c593tx6bfp1py9c2uvqm5p

Wii Fit is similar to EA’s Active in that it’s a fitness game that helps you set goals and track your progress. It’s different in the sense that it’s not a solitary game. There are many different activities to choose from and it’s definitely a lot of fun playing with another person. In case you were wondering, I am a hula-hooping champion.

Mother's Too

14 W Division St Chicago, IL 60610

Can’t cut it without the bumpers? Why not join a Wii Bowling League at Mother’s Too on Thursday nights?

Why every guy should buy their girlfriend a Wii Fit

Remember that guy who recorded his girlfriend hula-hooping pantsless? Boys beware: that guy had to appear on Tyra and hula-hoop pantsless for a live audience.

Streeters

50 E Chicago Ave Chicago, IL 60611

What are you doing Tuesday night? Why not check out Streeters and play classic bar games like darts, shuffle board, pinball and even CUP PONG on the Wii. You can also enjoy $5 Malibu and Smirnoff Summer cocktails.

Boom Blox

EA puts out some pretty awesome games. Another one of my addictions is Boom Blox. Boom Blox is a glorified version of Jenga, except there’s not a lot of clean-up. There’s more to it than just that. There’s 300 puzzles that require you to remove blocks by either throwing something at them or pulling them. There’s flying blocks that require you to shoot bowling balls and lasers. There are thieves who steal your blocks. It’s crazy, but definitely addicting. Plus, as you go along, you unlock tools so you can create your own puzzles.

Black Sun Games Game Store

5426 N Kedzie Avenue Chicago, IL 60625

These folks take gaming seriously!

Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess

Widget_cjcenrpv9bwa48lnwwgzgb

Rumor has it that The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess is the best Zelda game ever made or at least master game designer Shigeru Miyamoto thinks so. “Twilight Princess features a huge overworld, more dungeons than ever before and brand new gameplay mechanics such as the ability for Link to transform into a wolf.” A wolf!!!

Trauma Center: Second Opinion

I owned this game for a few months. I played it often and killed many patients. It’s a good thing I’m not a doctor in real life.

Heron Point Convention Center

665 West North Avenue Lombard, IL 60148

The Video Game Summit will be held on July 18th in Lombard, a suburb of Chicago. The summit brings together classic and modern generation gamers from all over the country to swap stories, games and compete in various Atari challenges.

Punch-Out!!

When I asked for Wii game recommendations, Punch-Out!! received an overwhelming response. I don’t know if I asked an angry crowd or if it’s really that awesome of a game, but I’m looking forward to finding out!

Mario Kart

I haven’t had the chance to play this yet, but I already know that I’m missing out. At least once a week I’ll see a few people on Twitter playing each other and it seems like a blast! Just don’t play against @mominreallife

Super Monkey Ball Banana Blitz

Widget_ag13h-j0jao5ekuewtojp7

I would buy this for its name alone, but check out that screen capture. Floating bananas!!! Banana Blitz, the sequel to Super Monkey Ball, includes 100 new puzzle mazes and 50 spectacular new mini-games

People Play Games

3264 N. Clark St Chicago, IL 60657

A great place to visit if you’re looking for old school and hard-to-find accessories and games.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl

Brawl features a cast of characters from all over the Nintendo universe. This game should settle any of those “who would win in a fight” debates you have going with your friends.

Video Games Then & Now

4351 N Harlem Ave Norridge, IL 60706

Video Games Then & Now sells more than your standard next-gen console gaming equipment. This place is great for old school gamers since they have Nintendo, Atari, Sega Genesis, and even older consoles. Plus they make repairs, woo hoo!

Super Mario Galaxy

Widget_cixcuzvmzi3pq1fzj94axt

I’m not going to lie, I have mixed feelings about this game, but I had to include it because it’s been recommended to me so many times. My mixed feelings have nothing to do with the awesomeness of this game. It’s me, not the game. I couldn’t beat one of the bosses and so it sat on my shelf untouched for nearly a year. I finally beat the boss and I’m super excited to explore more galaxies! It’s a great game whether you’re an experienced gamer or just starting out (unless you’re me.)

The Original Mother's

26 W Division St Chicago, IL 60610

On Wednesday nights (starting at 10 p.m.) you can rock out with Rock Band in the back room while enjoying $2 PBR, $3 drafts, $5 Kilo Kai and $6 bombs!

River Shannon

425 W Armitage Ave Chicago, IL 60614

Tuesday night is game night! Take a chance on some board games or pass Go and head over to Guitar Hero.

Guitar Hero 3: World Tour

Widget_bh4dmcaabjzle_5zefqtp-

I am horrible at Guitar Hero 1, 2 and 3, but I sure have a fun time trying to be good. GH 3 lets you choose from guitar, bass and drums and has a pretty awesome set list around 80 songs, including “Rebel Yell” by Billy Idol, “Beat It” by Michael Jackson and “Hotel California” by the Eagles.

Mary’s Attic in Andersonville has a wii you can play, and New Wave Cafe in Logan Square has an original Nintendo and a good chunk of games for their cafe-goers to enjoy with their latte!
