Because Women Sing it Best
Whenever someone asks me my favorite bands and singers, I ramble off a list a mile long. But recently, I've been noticing that all my favorite singers are male. How could this be? There are so many fabulous female artists out there. Lots that don't get the credit they deserve. If you're looking to add a little more women power into your life, these girls will certainly do the job. Most of them could out-sing any man. Plus, lots of them sing amazing workout music. Let's show the ladies some love.
Tristan Prettyman
Tristan is so beautiful and simple, there’s no way you couldn’t like her. I can’t even remember how I discovered her, but once I started listening, I was hooked. And once I found out she was dating Jason Mraz, I fell in love even more. Most perfect couple ever!! Unfortunately, Tristan and Jason have since broken up (tear), but their duet, “Shy That Way” will remain one of my favorite songs forever.
This 26-year-old San Diego native sings about love loss, and being happy. She’s just so breezy and easy on the ears, I’m always in the mood to listen to Tristan.
One of my favorite Tristan videos shos Tristan in her element.
“This life is a beautiful one…So baby keep your head up. Keep it on the up and up”
Tristan and Jason
I just had to include a pic of Tristan and Jason because I think they’re adorable together. And make beautiful music.
Camera Obscura
Camera Obscura is a band from Scotland who never fails to entertain me. I just think a lot of their songs are funny and just plain fun to listen to. Plus, it’s all prety unique and I can’t think of any other bands that sound anything like Camera Obscura.
Allegedly they have a new album coming out in 2009. Woot!
This is definitely one of the best Camera Obscura songs and is awesome because it’s in response to Lloyd Cole and the Commotions’ song “Are You Ready to be Heartbroken?” Plus, the video is a blast.
Camera Obscura Album
And I love how old school Camera Obscura’s albums look. Plus the name of this one? “Under Achievers Please Try Harder.” Classic.
Delta Goodrem
24-year-old Delta Goodrem makes the perfect gym music for me. This Australian has been signed by Sony since she was 15 years old. When Delta was 18, she found out she had cancer, but seems to be doing really well now.
While she doesn’t seem to be extremely well known in the U.S. yet, I have a feeling that will change. How could we not love her music?
One of Delta’s best “treadmill songs.” Whenever this comes on my iPod, I seem to be able to run twice as fast.
Her voice actually reminds me a lot of Celine Dion. Really, really pretty.
Lykke Li
More perfect treadmill music. Or just plain dancing music. Lykke Li is from Sweden and I always say those Swedish musicians are a bit “out there,” but sometimes “out there” is the best way to be when it comes to music. A lot of indie music lovers are fans of Lykke’s, but I can definitely see her come into more of the mainstream. The music is a little different, but it’s the kind of music you just can’t help dancing to and loving.
OK, so the music video is a bit strange, but I told you, it’s a Swedish thing. But it sure is entertaining.
Not only does the song’s beat make it perfect for working out, but the lyrics contribute too:
“I’m working a sweat, but it’s all good. I’m breaking my back, but it’s all good. Cause I know I’ll get it back”
Ingrid Michaelson
You probably already know who Ingrid Michaelson is. Well, maybe you don’t, but you’ll definitely start hearing more about her very soon. Her popularity has blown up over the last year or so and most people can’t help but like her. Plus, one of her songs was in an Old Navy commercial.
Besides the fact that she has a really sweet voice and is adorable, I think so many people like her for her easy to relate to lyrics and her story-telling songs.
This is her Old Navy commercial song. How cute is it?? Obviously the part from the Old Navy commercial: "If you are chilly, here take my sweater.
September
One of my friends introduced me to September because she knows I’m always looking for good “treadmill music.” And September is perfect! September is also…Swedish! Her real name is Petra and she sings a kind of techno dance music. I haven’t heard her on any of the Boston radio stations, but apparently they play her in New York City and Chicago and probably other places that are cooler than Boston.
If you need some hot workout music, September is perfect.
Don’t you want to just jump on a treadmill and run when you hear this song? No. Well, if you’re on one and September comes on your iPod, you’ll totally amp it up!
A Fine Frenzy
A Fine Frenzy is actually 22-year-old Alison Sudol and though it seems that many people have never heard of her, her music has been everywhere lately. Well, mostly on The Hills, but still, that’s kind of everywhere.
She actually seems to be much more popular in Europe than in the United States, despite the fact she’s from Seattle. A Fine Frenzy also does an amazing rendition of Death Cab for Cutie’s “I Will Follow You Into the Dark.”
I loved this song before it was featured in the episode of The Hills where Audrina is saying goodbye to Justin Bobby (that lasted long). Sigh to Audrina’s almost lover.
“Goodbye, my almost lover. Goodbye, my hopeless dream. I’m trying not to think about you. Can’t you just let me be?”
The Watson Twins
The Watson twins is made up of Los Angeles twins (duh), Chandra and Leigh Watson. The famous Rilo Kiley singer, Jenny Lewis, has also been known to join them in many of their musical ventures.
The twins haven’t been on the music scene for too long, but I enjoy listening to their easy-going smooth voices. Plus, I think it’s cute they’re twin sisters. Not that they need it, but I’m sure Jenny Lewis will help them continue in their success!
One of my favorite Watson Twins songs. And there are lots of cute things you can do with twins in music videos…though they definitely don’t look exactly alike.
“How am I to be with all your silly ways now?”
Corinne Bailey Rae
I’ve been a fan of Corinne Bailey Rae for a long, long time, mostly because her first self-titled CD is amazing. It’s one of those albums where I love basically every song on it. She’s only the 4th British female to have her album debut at #1 and once you listen to her, you’ll see why.
I’m really hoping she comes out with a new album soon!
I still remember exactly where I was the first time I heard this song and how I felt. It holds a lot of meaning. And, I think, absolutely beautiful.
“Just like a star across my sky, just like an angel off the page. You have appeared to my life, feel like I’ll never be the same.”
Rachael Yamagata
Rachael has what I think is one of the most beautiful voices I’ve heard in my life. She sings the kind of music that makes you just want to close your eyes and feel it. Her voice is full of emotion and her lyrics are so easy to relate to, in an un-cliche kind of way. Plus, I’m a fan of most musicians who can play the piano and Rachael plays it beautifully.
Rachael also sang backup for several tracks for Ryan Adams and the Cardinals.
This song is a really good example of the beauty of Rachael’s singing. And watching the video, you can also see how beautiful Rachael is herself. And just how much she feels the emotion in her songs. When you can tell a musician completely feels what they’re singing, the song is a million times better.
“So, I will head out alone and hope for the best. We can pat ourselves on the back and say that we tried.”
Rachael
I just think Rachael Yamagata is beautiful.
Leona Naess
Leona Naess is one of those artists where I like pretty much everything she sings. Right when I think I’ve found my favorite song, I fall in love with the next one. Her songs have been featured on a lot of great television shows like “The OC” and “Weeds,” but she’s still relatively unknown. I hope this changes for her soon because her music is beautiful.
She was also once engaged to Ryan Adams. Who knew so many of my favorite female singers have some connection to Ryan Adams?!
Watch out! She’ll charm you!
This is the best video ever made. It’s a Ryan Adams song, featuring Leona Naess, Elton John, and Adam Duritz. Amazing.
She & Him
OK, so I know there’s a guy in She & Him (obviiously), but I’m including them anyway because they’re so cool. Why is She & Him so cool? Well, partly because Zooey Deschanel is in it. And she’s an amazing singer. The other half of She & Him, M. Ward, actually heard Zooey sing in “Elf” and decided he wanted to work with her.
The music is just a lot of fun and the kind of music I can happily listen to at any time. Oh, and Paste Magazine is calling their album the #1 album of 2008. Woot.
Perfect, right? I’m insanely jealous that Zooey is not only an amazing actress, but a beautiful singer too. True talent.
She & Him
She & Him are adorable together and I’m telling, it’s just not possible for you to dislike Zooey Deschanel!
