The Beginning
In 1993, Brad Modesitt and his brother Kent canoed down the Poudre, Platte, Missouri, and Mississippi Rivers to end up 2400 miles later in New Orleans. This experience left both of them with a deep respect for our nation’s rivers. Kent started law school and is now an attorney in Denver. Brad continued his journey and the traveling lifestyle bicycling 10,000 miles and sailing 3000 miles to southern Chile. When he returned a friend told him he should become a rafting guide. It was good advice. Brad still guides rafts down the river he loves enjoying the people, the scenery, and of course the rapids.

Brad now runs the business with his wife Lindsey and the big bosses, 31-month-old Ella and 2-month-old Chase. They love their jobs, lives, each other and the chance to show others how special the Cache La Poudre River is and why it is Colorado’s only “Wild and Scenic River”

This is the most powerful rapid on this run. The river constricts here and plunges over a series of three drops. This is your biggest test of the day and a sure bet you’ll get soaked.

Experienced rafters and excitement seekers will want this particular river adventure. It has all the scenery of the Poudre Splash, but adds big class IV rapids that will make your heart pound and bring a huge smile to your face. The almost continuous rapids like Tunnel, Three Rock, and Pine View Falls keep the fun going the entire trip. For real excitement book your trip for the high water in June.
Brad Modesitt started out canoeing rivers in Michigan and Ohio. Then, in 1993 he canoed 2400 miles down the Cache La Poudre, Platte, Missouri, and Mississippi Rivers to New Orleans. Continuing on a bicycle he made his way to southern Chile. After the trip, he started guiding paddle rafts on the Cache La Poudre River in Fort Collins. After a couple years, he moved to Idaho to work on the Main Salmon, Lower Salmon and Snake Rivers. He soon became manager of a great company with sights on starting an even better company.
In 2000,Brad started Mountain Whitewater Descents on the Cache La Poudre River. We have taken 40,000 guests since then and the feedback couldn’t be better. We put an immense amount of time into training our guides, because our motto is “Our Guides Make the Difference!” If we didn’t put the time into training our staff, we wouldn’t be able to say that. This book is a compilation of the last 20 years; being guide trained (poorly), trained on a different river (quite different training) and then starting Mountain Whitewater Descents and having to come up with an entire program. And even before that when he had to train people at Target (not nearly as fun). During the last 14 years he was certified by Les Bechtel in river rescue, a National Ski Association Ski Patroller, as a Wilderness First Responder, in Outdoor Emergency Care, as an Emergency Medical Technician and has been a CPR and First-Aid instructor.
