Mount Rushmore National Memorial, near Keystone, South Dakota, is a granite sculpture created by Gutzon Borglum.
The project started on October 4, 1927 and ended on October 31, 1941. The entire memorial covers 1,278.45 acres and is 5,725 feet above sea level.
Representing the first 150 years of history for the United States, the 60ft. sculptures of the heads of former United States presidents George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln.
Most people don’t know that Thomas Jefferson was originally intended to appear in the area at Washington’s right, the rock was found to be unsuitable. The work done on the “original” Jefferson figure was dynamited, and a new figure was sculpted to Washington’s left.
Currently, Mount Rushmore is managed by the National Park Service, and attracts approximately two million people every year.
