Mom and Pop Are In Chicago

A big city like Chicago can't survive without the mom and pop businesses of this city. Most Midwesterners know that once you get rid of mom and pop, nothing tastes good. These stores know how to make you feel at home away from home. Instead of going to Subway, where their sandwiches taste like cardboard, why not support your local businesses? Don't forget to clean your plate and ask for seconds.

Letizia's Natural Bakery

2144 W Division St, Chicago, IL 60622

I discovered this place when I was on many a quest for coffee one afternoon. When I walked in, a young guy behind the counter began a conversation with me about the owner, Letizia. He said, “If there is one thing you should know about this place, it’s Letizia. She is like a mother to everyone.”

Its a small cafe filled with tables and desk lamps to do some reading by.

Every baked good you can think of is here at
Letizia’s and it’s made with all natural ingredients (hince the name). From Paninis to pies, they’ve got ‘em and don’t think you’ll stop with just the panini.

Sultan's Market

2057 W North Ave, Chicago, IL 60647

Falafel anyone? My friends and I ride our bikes over to Sultan’s just to get a huge tub of hummus, falafel and pita bread. I recently discovered that they also have natural aloe water. Yeah, didn’t know you could drink aloe.

They have tons of Middle Eastern candies and strange drinks that we don’t see over here in the US. Dried dates and little savory candies are fun to snack on.

T-Shirt Deli Co

1739 N Damen Ave, Chicago, IL 60647

Want a shirt to stay or to go? Made fresh daily, you can design your own shirt, or order a designed and custom made for you and your shirt. You can even design underwear with your face on it. Believe me, I’ve looked into this one.

Just don’t piss ’em off or they might spit on your shirt.

Weber's Bakery

El Guapo recommended!!

This south side Chicago landmark has been family owned for three generations. It’s the only place I know in the city where customers will drive two hours on a Sunday morning to pick up baked goods and not even think twice about it.

El Guapo recommended!!

As Chicago’s first clothing store devoted to “ecofashion” all the clothes at this West Loop boutique use organic or sustainable materials.

Not only do they sell nice clothes, but the owner is super-generous and is always looking to give back to the Chicago community, so that’s an added plus.

Old Town Ale House

Widget_cw9fxtwwbk06o784sxdg0v

El Guapo recommended!!

Probably the best bar in Chicago. All the crusty old regulars at this divey Old Town watering hold have there faces painted up on the walls. There are also some interesting nudey paintings on the walls painted by the owner, including a new one of VPILF, Sarah Palin.

Olivia's Market

2014 W Wabansia Ave, Chicago, IL 60647

No need to go to a huge grocery store conglomerate, you’ll just get lost in there anyway. There are too many isles!

Located in the heart of Bucktown, this quaint little market has all the little essentials you need for your cabinets and refrigerators. Plus, healthy options to grab when you’re on the go.

Where To Find 'Em

Lula Cafe

2537 N Kedzie Blvd, Chicago, IL 60647

THEIR COFFEE IS AMAZING!!! This hipster cafe has become one of my favorite places to get breakfast and a cup of coffee. Located in Logan Square, Lula has a casual bohemian, casual atmosphere that no chain restaurant can EVER recreate.

Legend has it that guys have proposed to their girlfriends just so they could get some of Weber’s famous buttercream wedding cake. Whether the legend is true or not, the bottom line is the stuff is good. You should try it.

El Guapo also recommends Grandpa’s Rye Bread.

La Pasadita

Widget_b1cs5mrn9ax4qwa7j7a5id

El Guapo recommended!!

Since El Guapo moved to Chicago from LA, this is the best carne asada taco that I’ve found in Chicago.

This family-owned hole-in-the-wall has been serving up grindy tacos to Chicagoans since 1976. The weird part about this place is that there are three different locations all on the SAME block??!! Not sure if they got this real estate business strategy from the game of Monopoly or what, but who cares, these tacos are bueno. Go to any one of the taquerias. You won’t be dissapointed .

a la Card, Chicago: The Best Way to Find Your Favorite Mom N Pop Restaurant

Widget_b5a0ew4wpj4lr7ftb_e2oi

El Guapo recommended!!

Quite possibly the best purchase I’ve made since I’ve been in Chicago. A la Card is like a Mom and Pop version of the Zagat guide only much, much cooler and with way better restaurants.

Basically, the guide is a deck of 52 cards. Each card describes an awesome owner-operated restaurant in the city ranging from fancy-schmancy French cuisine to hole in the wall Thai food and taco joints. The best part is that each card is also a $10 gift certificate to the restaurant it describes so you get to find great new mom and pop restaurants and you also get a little discount on your meal to boot.

You can pick up a deck at a number of indie food stores around the city or purchase them online

I like how you put all three El Pasadita locals on there. It is quite bizarre that they are all on the same block.

I am not loyal to any one place that serves up coffee. I like to hop around from place to place until I have found the perfect cup of coffee, or at least until my heart gives out. I love to poke fun at people, places, and circumstance. You can be a Coffee Slut too. Let's chat over a cup...
