Well shoot. Sometimes New York City's real tough on a country boy. Boy's gotta have a place to hang his hat, slide his boots, and something good to put in his belly. Here's a coupla spots you might just wanna check out next time you're in town - make you cowboys and girls a little more at home.
Cowboys and girls need a ride, too, and here at Kensington Stables in the friendly borough of Brooklyn, they will find just that. Horseback riding enthusiasts citywide have to look beyond the upper-crust and frankly, crusty, now crusted shut doors of Claremont Riding Academy on New York’s Upper West Side. Kensington Stables offers horseback riding lessons, trail and carriage rides, (not so cowboy), as well as pony parties. With lessons starting at just $40, heck, why not?
This store’s got a whole heck of a lot of West and Southwest junk from wallets with bears on ‘em, buffalo trophies, pony chaps, cowboy shirts, rodeo turquoise, and plenty of other knick knacks. Best of all, they’ve got a pretty good selection of Native American stuff, too. The smell of a good saddle makes this cowgirl teary-eyed.

Ride that bucking bronco if you know what’s good for you. Well, this one’s mechanical, but after a few stiff ones, your stomach won’t know the difference.

I can always count on Dallas BBQ to deliver me my three favorite sides with a free corn muffin thrown in for good measure. My order is: small side of stuffing, small side of BBQ baked beans, and a small side of cole slaw. What a de-light. Now I can’t claim as I’ve ever eaten at the restaurant (only delivery for me), but I’ve been told by friends that their drinks are famously large.
You’re right, you’re right; it’s Irish-owned, but Mustang Sally’s has some mean BBQ.

Harry Nilsson & John Lennon in NYC
“Everybody’s talking at me. I don’t hear a word they’re saying, Only the echoes of my mind. People stopping staring, I can’t see their faces, Only the shadows of their eyes.” -Harry Nilsson, “Midnight Cowboy”
A couple of cowboy sights worth seeing at The Metropolitan Museum of Art are The Bronco Bucker bronze statue by Frederic Remington, and “Rodeo NYC” a black and white photo by Robert Frank. Yee haw.
Frye Boots in New York City? Ya’ll are crazy. Why would anyone want to fry a perfectly good boot? If ya’ll are really that hungry, it’s time to get on a bus and head south, if y’ask me. Anyway, the Shoe Parlor has a wide array of the newest in these trendy kickers in a very convenient and central Midtown location. And since Frye has expanded from cowboy boots to refined lady slippers, they now appeal to the cowboy kind and even the pre-supper cocktail crowd.
I done attended more ‘an one birthday at The Cowgirl Hall of Fame, and other than the usual hooey that comes with friends-of-friends not putting in the right amount of money for the scroll-long check, it is most enjoyable. The bar area can get a bit crowded on the most popular nights, so the back room is the best area to hang out in and get yourself out of the way if you can make it there. The appetizers have consistently beat out the entrees for me, so this is the place to go for a drink and some light nosh.
The Naked Cowboy. This boy’s just right off his mind. Prancing around Times Square in his briefs with his guitar…chattin’ up the tourists. There’s really no other city in the world where this would be considered normal. Seems anyone can grab themselves a little piece of “fame” in this town.
Seein’ as how Brother Jimmy’s on the west side is located smack dab in the middle of New York City frat boy lane (otherwise known as Amsterdam Avenue in the 80s), you’re bound to run into more than a few, and they’re bound to be cokey and loaded. But for a pitcher of beer and some bbq between friends, Jimmy’s can be just what the doc ordered.
