Do you find yourself choosing different clothes or wearing cover up to hide your spider veins? Have you stopped going to the beach, wearing a favorite skirt or hoping that no one notices the small veins on your nose or cheeks? If so, we understand your situation because we treat patients just like you.

Facial Spider Veins and Telangiecstasia

One of the more common signs of aging is the appearance of veins. Spider veins or telangiectasia, are tiny dilated veins near the surface of the skin that commonly appear on the face, chest, neck and legs. They are either red or blue and somewhat resemble a spider web (hence the name) or small tree branches. They are small blood vessels that surface, becoming visible due to a number of reasons. From a simple stimulant such as blushing or spicy food, to more complex issues such as hormones, excessive sun and cortisone medications, spider veins appear. While their function is unknown, their coloration makes the skin look blemished and unhealthy. Most patients are eager to be rid of them.

Telangiecstasia are clusters of very fine blood vessels (capillaries) more frequently on the face around the nose and the mid-cheek. Both spider veins and telangiecstasia are cosmetic concerns with little medical significance. They are easily removed or diminished by use of the Candela laser.

Laser Spider Vein frequently asked questions (FAQ)

How many sessions are required?

The amount of sessions required will vary from person to person and also the area being treated. For the majority of people an average of 2 to 3 sessions are required to permanently remove unwanted vessels or reduce diffuse redness. This average is dependent on factors such as vessel depth, diameter and colour.

Is it permanent?

Many patients experience permanent vessel removal, however most patients have a genetic tendency to form dilated vessels and will need additional treatments as more vessels lose their elasticity and become visible at the skins’ surface. Pregnancy, prolonged periods of standing, medications, excessive sun exposure, and some cosmetics can all contribute to the formation of dilated vessels or diffuse redness.

How should I prepare for my laser spider vein treatment?

To maximise results and to reduce the risk of adverse skin reactions the following activities should be avoided for at least 2 weeks prior to treatment:

  • Sun exposure (apply a SPF 30+ sunscreen daily and avoid the sun)
  • Solariums
  • Spray Tanning

The treated area should be clean, free of make-up, lotion and products on the day of treatment.

What happens after my treatment?

Immediately following your treatment, the area may appear slightly red and swollen. Some vessels will be thermally destroyed immediately and will no longer be visible. Other vessels will appear to be darker and larger, particularly those vessels treated on the legs. These coagulated vessels will gradually dissolve over several weeks and diminish in appearance.

Treatments performed on the face have an added benefit of improving the complexion by reducing pore size and diminishing minor imperfections. The individual treatment results may be subtle, but the accumulative effect of multiple treatments can produce a significant improvement.

Are there any restrictions after the treatment?

In general the following activities should be avoided until all redness has subsided:

  • Strenuous exercise or activities that can cause profuse sweating
  • Make-up and topical medications
  • Scrubbing, shaving, and exfoliating
  • Swimming pools and spas (chlorinated water)

Sun exposure should be avoided for at least 2 weeks after treatment.

Laser Spider Vein Treatment

At ASTORIA medSPA, we utilize next-generation Candela Lasers, long-time leaders in the laser industry and considered by many to be the “gold” standard. The GentleYAG laser can eliminate spider veins in a flash with literally no pain and no down time, replacing the painful injection procedure used in the past.

There is no painful recovery period, no bruising and no need for long weeks of wearing compression stockings. A patient is asked to avoid strenuous activity for about one week following the procedure, but is really able to resume normal activity immediately after the procedure with minimal, if any, discomfort. This is just one example of what you can expect from our services. We always have your comfort and safety in mind, and want you to be thrilled with the outcome.

Laser Spider Vein treatment very different from the older, more traditional injection treatment – sclerotherapy. With lasers, we do not need to pierce the skin to close off these small spider veins. Rather we are able to close these small veins using heat energy from the lasers. Lasers achieve the same goal of collapsing the spider vein but without the need for an injection by using heat energy to shrink the small blood vessels. Both methods can be effective for treating small veins but our patients choose laser vein removal for several reasons. In some cases they have already tried sclerotherapy with no success. Others say they have had problems with the pain and brown and purple scars caused by sclerotherapy, while others just have an aversion to needles.
