Los Angeles Sings!: A Mix Tape
Love or hate it, Los Angeles is sort of inspiring. And while it seems that singer/songwriters enjoy railing against it, I think that deep down inside they secretly love it here. Well, when they're not describing it going up in flames, that is.
“How I abhor this place/Its sweet and bitter taste/Has left me wretched, retching on all fours/Los Angeles, I’m yours”
At last! Someone has finally encapsulated my love/hate relationship with LA. God bless you Colin Meloy.
Dear Rivers Cuomo,
The Playboy Mansion is not in Beverly Hills. It is in Holmby Hills.
Sincerely Yours,
Elijay
Playboy Mansion
10236 Charing Cross Rd. Los Angeles , CA 90024
Screw Beverly Hills, isn’t the Playboy Mansion where we all want to be?
Emo heartbreak in Silverlake— now there’s a novel concept. Hey, remember Seth Cohen?
Where it’s cool to be moody.

“What the hell am I doing drinking in LA? At 26?”
Wow. I think my existence has just been summed up in a single ’90s song lyric. My life just got way more pathetic.
Trader Vic's
800 W. Olympic Blvd., #A-120 Los Angeles , CA 90015
While the OG Trader Vic’s in Beverly Hills is no more, you can relive all the Tiki glory at the bar’s new location at the LA Live Entertainment complex.
For those of you that don’t know La Cienega is a street in LA. I actually used to live a block away from La Cienega Blvd.. But I never saw Ryan Adams. Too bad.
In California By Neko Case
“Another suicide on the 405/The Black Dahlia she’s smiles and smiles/It’s the same old town that bled her dry/One more starlet one more time/Bound to make it do or die/Talk a walk to Bonnie Brae/Try to wash these dreams away/They try to tell me L.A is beautiful when it rains”
Good thing Neko isn’t in charge of doing PR for the city of Los Angeles.
“But when the palm trees bow their heads/No matter how cruel I’ve been/LA, you always let me back in”
Like a lover with poor self esteem, Los Angeles always takes you back.
Tom Petty immortalized the San Fernando Valley (what, what!) in this song. Reseda, vampires, Mulholland Drive— it’s all here. Part of the video was shot in Sherman Oaks (I’d recognize that Cadillac dealership on Ventura and Tyrone anywhere), however the mall scene was not shot in the Valley—strange, especially considering that the Valley was probably the epicenter of mall culture circa 1989.
This is the mall that Tom Petty walks around during the song.

While definitely not my favorite Bad Religion song (that honor belongs to Infected), this song deserves some mention just because Los Angeles is usually on fire at some point or another. (In case you weren’t aware, God really hates Los Angeles and it catches on fire frequently. Either that, or arsonists love LA.)
Alla en la Pico/Hey vamos a jugar futbol ahà en el Griffith park/La Pico and Vermont/La locura
Yeah now I’m going to LACC/I’m taking a ceramics class/See the vegetable man
Beck, the Eastside’s hipster poster boy, gives a shout out to his LA hood.
I would play some soccer in the park with Beck.

I would also consider taking a Ceramics class here with Beck.

While this could very well be a subliminal advertisement to ride LA’s public transportation system, it’s a good song just the same.
Just in case you decide to take a note from Gary and want to “ride Downtown Los Angeles.”

Karma's Payment by Modest Mouse
“I went to L.A. the next day/I got jacked, in a really bad way/I can not tell you, but, it’s a long story”
Somehow, I really don’t doubt the veracity of this song. Oh, Isaac Brock).
