Though I don't physically live in Steamboat, my soul seems to stay there after I leave. Maybe it has to do with the old Ute legend : ""Those who come to the Yampa Valley to live will never be able to leave. If they do succeed in leaving the valley, they'll be forced to return," From the people to the mountain, Steamboat is the last gem for those who appreciate the understated resort. This and the fact that I know the mountain better than my house.
Welcome to the definitive Steamboat Visitors Guide
Steamboat's Balloon Rodeo
The Balloon Rodeo, though a seemingly misnomer, provides spectators with inspiring views of a sometimes over 40-balloon-tapestry hanging above the massive valley.
Cloud Shadows on Mt. Werner
The above photo was taken about 1/2 mile from the base of Mt. Werner. With its radiant presence serving as a backdrop to the Yampa Valley, Mt. Werner serves as a fitting apex to the wonderfully green glen.
Great Food!
These are my top 6 places. Some are pricey, some aren’t.
This place is as golden as one those legendary secret caches of Cherry Steamboat Pow Pow (snowboarder for ‘fresh powder.’) Tucked behind the shops in Ski Times Square, The Butcher Shop joyfully lacks the snotty ambiance of most resort steakhouses. It is, however, loaded with remarkably historic charm, 1870-ish antique western surroundings and buttery delicious steaks with no fiscal hangover.

I never thought “family-friendly” would become so important to me when I was in my twenties. Ten years later, pizza, pasta and a great kids menu with fast service gets my vote week in and week out.

A phenomenal wine list. Great wild game fare. Succulent deserts. One of the better restaurants in all of Colorado and is actually located in restaurant-challenged Steamboat. Diva has limited seating…er…very limited seating. So make a reservation.

Non-Mountain Activities
Not a skier, hiker or mountain biker? Plenty of alternative activities in Steamboat.
These springs are located between Steamboat and mountain village. They were completely remodeled in 2008 and may, in fact, be the nicest natural hot springs in the state of Colorado.

Located at the base of historic Howelsen Hill, The HH Ice Arena is a modern hockey facility for all levels. From rodeo to softball, the base area really showcases the Springs abundant love for the outdoors and sports. Here’s my brother and myself playing hockey with our kids.
Some wine, some fine cheese and some beautiful music with the majestic Storm Mountain as your background. Wow.

A Little History of Steamboat
Steamboat was a favorite summer ‘tourist trap’ for the Ute Indians until the 1880’s. They used the Yampa Valley for hunting and fishing as well as the area hot springs as ‘medicine springs.’ Most of the Utes were forced out of the Yampa Valley in 1879.
First White Settlers
James Crawford brought his family to the valley in 1875 and lived peacefully among the Utes for four years until the US Army’s removal of the Ute tribes to Utah in 1879.
Ten more families moved to the valley over the next six years. One of them was James Maxwell, a newspaper man by trade. Maxwell founded the Steamboat Pilot in 1885.
The Pilot still publishes today. It’s free sister paper, Today, is the first thing one should grab to find out what’s going on.
The Flying Norseman
Carl Howelsen arrived in 1913 and established both ski-jumping and The Steamboat Winter Carnival in 1914. His namesake mountain, and still Colorado’s oldest ski hill, is located downtown. Howelsen Hill is home to ski racing, Steamboat’s Winter Sports Club and many international jumping events.
Modern Day Ski Town USA
But you may have never heard of Steamboat had it not been for the opening of Storm Mountain in 1961 as Steamboat Ski Area. It was later renamed Mt. Werner after the death of local Olympic legend, Buddy Werner. Werner, a Steamboat Springs native, was the first American downhiller to win at Kitzbühel in 1959 but died in an avalanche outside St. Moritz in 1964.
