Live Indie and Alternative Music Listings: Where to Search
Every major metro seems to have its own online site for finding live local music. I thought I'd start a compendium of site links that can grow with the collective wisdom of other indie / alternative music lovers. To get the ball rolling, here are a few sites I routinely check when I travel. Feel add links you know of, let's collect up all the best local music search sites across the US (heck, the world!).
The second sibling of OMR seems to be picking up steam in the Windy City.
The music listings is a decent interactive local music guide, and their music blog is getting better.
I’m an accidental tourist when it comes to LA, so this site may or may not be comprehensive. If their NY and Chicago sites are any indication, though, it’s probably darn good.
SF Station has long been the bible of local arts and entertainment. It’s a bit frustrating with their search classification, but it’s a well done site and fun to browse.
Also, sfweekly.com/music is high on my list – it is more searchable, but does not have as much of a “voice”.
A spartan listing, but comprehensive. Visit montrealmirror.com for snipit editorial on who is playing each week.
OMR is a NY-based site which started in New York. It feels pretty darn comprehensive.
The link takes you to the detailed listing feed, but they also have daily editorial picks in their music section at philadelphiaweekly.com
The local arts weekly has a good search engine, and a comprehensive listing.
Now Magazine is the best local arts weekly, and has a pretty comprehensive listing of local music and venues.
While the site is a bit overdone (2.0 zealots that they are), Washington Post seems to be investing enough in their event section of the local city guides to be collecting and categorizing the local listings.

Other Useful Sites
For browsing outside the local music scenes, here are a couple of useful sites.
The people at Eventful are doing an admirable job of sucking up all the listings they can find and creating a 2.0 style experience.
However to me, it’s trying to boil an ocean, and the site has limited character or participation. Maybe someday…
At any rate, when you are looking in a place that doesn’t seem to have a true local site, this is a decent fall back.
LiveDaily does a good job of collecting up the multi-day music festivals, ranging from Pitchfork to Bonaroo. The pace of these has clearly been picking up, and these festivals are becoming great places to catch a ton of bands over a weekend.
A promising blog from guys who love live music. Worth grabbing into your RSS Feeder.
Pitchfork Links
While Pitchfork occasionally (okay, often) annoys the hell out of me with their review snootiness, their site is a great place to discover tour dates and news.
This Guide provides a basic description of some of the mid level to larger venues in town. Also included is a basic rundown of the facilities as well as the type of vibe and performers that you can expect to see there.
