Learn Something New in Los Angeles
Just cause you're not a runny-nosed kid anymore doesn't mean you can't learn a thing or two. And just because you were more likely to spend the afternoon frying ants with a magnifying glass than doing your homework, that doesn't mean that you won't enjoy learning now. Besides, cooking, knitting, surfing, writing, and scuba diving are way more exciting than fractions.
Learn to Knit
While knitting has become trendy in recent years, it’s actually an awesome hobby to have. Not only does it somehow relieve stress, but you get left with a one-of-a-kind piece of wearable art when you’re done!
Wildfiber
1453 14th Street Suite E Santa Monica, CA 90404
This knitting store is super cute. Not only do they have a beautiful (which also means $$$) selection of wool, but the staff also teach classes. They have classes for beginners who’ve never picked up a needle before and they also have project classes where you learn to make anything from tote bags to baby booties.
Learn a New Career
Today, it seems like less and less people are finding a career that they stick with for their entire lives. Since we now live in a world where the average person stays at their job for less than 5 years, switching careers seems almost a given nowadays. And a good way to test new career waters is to take a class.
UCLA Extension
10995 Le Conte Ave Westwood, CA 90024
UCLA Extension offers all kinds of classes. I’ve taken their regular and online classes, and while they are expensive I was pretty satisfied with both. Whether you want to learn about the music industry, embark on a new career as a graphic designer, or you just want to exercise your creative writing skills, Extension offers all kinds of interesting sounding classes to get you jump started.
Learn to Sew
If you’re anything like me, you love “Project Runway” and you think sewing machines are kinda scary (how don’t get a needle stuck in your hand in beyond me). But don’t fear! Taking a sewing class will absolve you of your fear and teach you how to become one of those super cool DIYers who can make their own culottes.
I just found out about these classes and they sound SUPER awesome. I’ve never actually used a sewing machine, and I would love to be able to save cash by hemming my pants at home— being short is SO not economical.

Learn to Write Creatively
I’ve taken a few creative writing classes in my day, and while they never left me with the great American novel, they did help me get my creative brain juices flowing. Plus, the classes are usually pretty fun and laid-back— a great antidote to rigid office life.
I wrote a story about the Writing Pad a while back and went to one of their classes and I totally loved it. It’s sort of like a modern day writer’s salon (with gourmet food I might add!) Marilyn (who teaches the classes) is all about making the environment safe, so you don’t have to worry about anyone telling you your writing sucks. I really liked the timed writing exercises where you’re pen isn’t allowed to lift off the page— they’re hard at first but they definitely help your ideas flow.

Learn to be a Wino
The benefits of being a wino are pretty apparent. Not only do you take the guesswork out of shopping in the wine section at Trader Joe’s, but you can navigate a wine list at a restaurant, and impress the hell out of a date (unless you’re annoyingly pretentious, that is).
LearnAboutWine

I just went on a trip to Sonoma, and I’m definitely inspired to take a wine class. There are just so many varietals when it comes to wine, I think it would be totally beneficial to take a class about wine. At this place you can learn about different grape types, how wine is made, and most importantly, proper food-wine parings.
Learn to Play a Musical Instrument
Playing an instrument is both challenging and strangely relaxing. It makes you use your brain in ways you probably aren’t used to, which makes it a good activity for your gray matter.
I took piano lessons for most of my childhood and I definitely did not practice enough, which I totally regret now as an adult, because I can barely remember how to read music. So I would definitely welcome a refresher course. This conservatory was started by Flea from the Red Hot Chili Peppers, so it’s waaaaay cooler to take piano lessons now than it was when I was kid.

Learn to Scuba Dive
I know a lot of people get certified for Scuba before they go on exotic vacations so they can literally swim with the fishes. But even if you’re not going to the Maldives just yet, Scuba is a good skill to have under belt— just in case you happen to win the lotto.
SoCal Scuba Divers
1626 Silver Lake Blvd Los Angeles , CA 90026
When I swim at the pool at Santa Monica College, I often see people taking Scuba classes there— and yes, it’s kind of funny to see people in Scuba gear in a pool. But it seems like it would pretty awesome to be able to go to the Caribbean or Mexico and swim with turtles and rays and whatnot.
Learn to Cook
Out of all the skills on here, I think cooking is probably the handiest. I’ve taken a few cooking classes before, and while it may seem tempting to take a salsa making class, the more boring sounding classes are the ones that usually prove the most useful. Let’s just say I haven’t put the skills I learned in my Indian cooking class into practice.
There’s a ton of cooking classes you can take in LA, but I think the New School is one of the best around. What I love about this place is not only do they have classes like Cooking With Thai Noodles and Cupcakes, but they also have classes in things like Knife Skills and Roasting— not the most romantic sounding, but definitely useful.

Learn to Act
Since it seems like everyone in this town is acting or wants to, acting classes are plentiful. So whether you’re thinking about quitting your day job to break into the acting biz, or you just want to get over that fear of public speaking, you won’t have trouble finding a class in LA.
Lots of acting classes in LA seem a tad sketchy to me, but the Acting Corps is legit— they’ve taught everyone from Leonardo DiCaprio to Rainn Wilson. They offer a pretty wide range of classes, and they’re all pretty serious about the acting business. So if you’re just flirting with the idea of acting, this school might not be for you.

Learn a New Language
When I was in college I really wanted to take Italian, German, and Japanese classes. But since I didn’t really want to spend 7 years in college, I decided to let my dreams of being a multilingual phenom pass by. But just because you’re not in school anymore it doesn’t mean you can’t learn to conjugate verbs.
Berlitz offers all kinds classes for people that are looking to conduct business abroad, live abroad, or learn Italian so they can say romantic sounding things to their significant other. They also have a study abroad program, just in case you missed that boat when you were in college.

Learn to Get in Touch With Your Inner "Artiste"
Whether you’re an aspiring Picasso or someone who can’t even draw a straight line with the help of a ruler (like yours truly), art classes are a great way to channel your inner creativity. And if you spend a majority of your day staring at Excel sheets at your day job, chances are you probably have A LOT of built up creativity in there.
My old roommate took some classes here and she made some pretty awesome stuff. She took a silkscreening class and made some pretty awesome prints. I once bought a home silk screening kit because I wanted to make my own shirts and it was sort of disaster, so I think I could definitely benefit from some instruction.

What I like about this place is that they offer an intro to art, where you can figure out whether you even like art classes, which is something I definitely find appealing as a novice when it comes to anything artistic. And it’s not medium specific, so you don’t have to decide whether you want to dabble to drawing, painting or mixed materials.

Learn to Surf
If you’re looking for a challenge, surfing is probably it. This sport is WAAAAAAAAY harder than it looks. Mastering strength and balance are just a few of the skills you’ll walk away with. Not to mention you’ll start developing killer abs.
Learn to Surf LA
641 Westminster Ave #5 Venice, CA 90291
I’ve been wanting to surf for a really long time, but I’ve just never gotten around to it— which is REALLY bad excuse since I live in LA. Surfing combines my two favorite past times— swimming and yoga— so I just need to get over my not-so-realistic fear of sharks, and get myself some lessons.
Learn to Dance
What’s fun about learning to dance as an adult, is that you don’t care as much if you look stupid. I wasn’t really a fan of dance classes when I was a kid, but now I just think of it as a way to let loose and have fun. Not to mention you’ll reap the benefits of getting a more dancer-like bod.
This place is a dance mecca. They offer pretty much any kind of dance class you’d want to take. They offer ballet, jazz, flamenco, Irish step dancing (hello Riverdance!), salsa, Latin, ballroom, tango, belly dance, and they even have yoga thrown in there for good measure.
