Latte or Espresso—Four Best Non-franchise Coffeehouses in Central AZ!

Have you ever tried clambering out of bed in the morning and realized that you were out of coffee. You know that last minute horrible feeling when you open up the pantry cupboard and go, “Damn, forgot coffee at the store last time I was there!” Then you suffer through your commute to work and get there groggy, tired and irritable. Well if you feel this way in the morning then join the club. Many of us are coffee freaks!
What I am sick and tired of is massive coffee house chains dominating all the complexes in the state. They squeeze the small businesses dry and offer okay coffee with okay service in a McDonald’s fashion that kills small business owners. Stray away from the corporate conglomerates—these non-franchise coffeehouses in Arizona are where everything is at. What follows are the top four non-franchise coffee houses in Arizona, hands down. From one caffeine addict to another, drink on—drink on!
This place is the mother of all coffee shops and houses in Arizona and I will happily tell you why. I have been drinking delicious coffee and enjoying great service and prices at JB for the better part of twelve years, almost since the place first opened. The previous owner, Dennis, was a very nice man who strove to great efforts to make his coffee shop stand out over all others.
After about two years ago or so, Dennis decided to get into another venture and consequently sold the place to my friend, Paul, who had worked there for years as a manager. The first thing that Paul did was remodel the entire place. He installed a new bar, new tables and chairs, new paint, new flooring—the whole shebang. The end result was a neo and modernized coffeehouse that stood apart from all others and looked freaking great!
He then added a beer bar with select specialty beers at great prices; they sell smokes and small eats too. The place is not only nice inside, other coffee houses simply pale in comparison to both the people that you will meet and the coffee that you will drink. And what other coffee house do you know of that sells beer?
All of that aside, the name derives from the famous Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee beans, which are some of the most expensive and delicious coffee beans that you can buy. They exclusively serve this coffee here, albeit it is very expensive, and that is where they got the name Jamaican Blue—which Paul has recently dubbed “Blue Bar”.
You will not find a better coffee house, better service or a nicer interior and exterior anywhere. Perhaps this is why Paul has recently decided to expand the place. There are several newer locations that are certain to open over the coming months in and around Phoenix. Rating: Six-stars for near-perfection! Good job Paul, and this rating is not because we are friends. This place is truly unique and amazing, and one-of-a-kind!

Paul Fetters, Owner of Jamaican Blue/Blue Bar
Paul Fetters and I have known each other for about ten years. He and I go way back. That being said, Fetters recently bought JB from its previous owner. He remodeled the entire place to grander that it had never seen the likes of before. Now the place is hopping, hip, happening and modern. Paul also added a limited beer bar and as a result the place is doing better business than ever before. Take that Starbucks!
This smaller, yet very welcoming coffee shop is located in a complex and tucked away; if you do not know that it is there one could easily drive on by and end up at a Starbucks; oh my! The owner, Steve, started this place up several years ago with one mission statement in mind: offer people great service, a great environment, free internet and of course, the best damned coffee to ever hit your lips.
This is exactly what he has done with Steve’s Espresso, and yes they have awesome espresso. I had a triple-shot and it was perky, bitter and foamy—just the way that I like it! While they do not have the best location in the world, they make up for it by providing exceptional service, good eats and great drinks.
Rating: Four-stars for service, cleanliness, great coffee and free internet. The location is kind of bad and they could use to have more than two tables on the so-called patio as well as more seating inside. But hey, this is a great little coffee shop, don’t get me wrong!

This nifty and one-of-a-kind coffee house on the Mesa/Tempe border has it all. They have a huge inside that offers a quiet and romantic escape from the traditional boredom of coffee houses that is prevalent in Arizona. They have great service, plenty of good eats, and some signature coffee drinks that you will not find anywhere else.
They also host open-mic nights and even have a small upright piano that from time-to-time will feature jazz pianists and others. The crowd consists of a younger 20s-something college type mostly studying for tests and clacking away on their keyboards. You can also get coffee from their drive-thru, which is rare in non-franchise coffee shops.
Rating: Five-stars for originality, location and service. I have had the pleasure of drinking coffee here on numerous occasions and they have yet to let me down. They also have cool open-mic nights and a great crowd of locals that are both friendly and talkative.

This nifty and very large coffee house is one of the best that you will ever find in Mesa, Arizona. They are most known for their awesome open-mic nights, where it can be hard to even find a table because the place gets so packed. Great service, awesome location and good coffee all equals a great coffee shop in my opinion.

This nifty and quiet location offers a great hub for studying ASU students to get their homework done. They offer great eats, amazing service and some of the best damned espresso that you will ever drink. Centrally located in downtown Tempe, you will find mostly a college crowd here. This cool little coffee house has been around for quite some time and they aim to stay around. They offer great eats and great coffee treats. The service is also great, or I would not be talking about them. They have a great location in South Tempe and some of the best frozen coffee drinks that you will ever drink on a hot summer day in AZ. If you get romantic about your coffee than slurp it down in style here.

Mill's End Espresso
310 S Mill Ave, #101, Tempe, AZ 85281
Located at the end of the very popular shopping district in downtown Tempe referred to as Mill by the locals—you will not find better coffee and espresso. While I have only been here on a few remote occasions, the service that I received and the coffee were both great. I would much rather find myself here that at any of the larger corporate coffee houses, and you already know how I feel about those.
Watch as the now superstar, A-list actor, Brad Pitt, is shown during the early days of his career in this coffee commercial. You can clearly see two things: Pitt loves his coffee and boy is he great in anything no matter what it is that he is acting.
Watch and learn as a professional coffee maker demonstrates how to make art out of a standard fare cappuccino. You will be amazed at the wonderful and creative designs this coffee master is capable of creating on the foam of a single cup of coffee.
