I'm Fixin' To Give You A Paddlin'
Spending the weekend on a river, a lake, a pond, even a puddle is better than spending a weekend with a vacuum, a dishwasher, a to-do list, and a headache. My kayak is currently rolled up in the garage awaiting its next great adventure, but while she's resting (yes, my kayak is female and her name is Sunny) I'm going to give you a quick breakdown for where to get your paddle on in the greater San Francisco area.
The Boat People
101 Brookside Place, Danville, CA
The Boat People are good people. This is where we bought our Sunny. The deal was great, the sale was zero pressure, and the advice was sound.
This is TOTALLY me
And I TOTALLY punched that shark in the face and said, “Get outta here!”
Gualala River
46764 Old State Hwy, Point Arena, CA
This was a great trip. The Gualala is tidal so be sure to check the tides before you go. As you can see from the picture below we were stuck portaging our kayak quite a bit during this trip. But the river and the scenery is great. Bring swim trunks and look for the giant log / diving board about 30 minutes down river.
And if you want to complete the trip with a great place to stay check out The Sea Ranch.
Gualala Portage
Here is Mrs. Hi Liner contemplating our slight miscalculation on how deep the river would be running.
This is not a crazy adrenaline river trip. This is a floater. This is a nice day floating down a river through Napa. Bring some wine (check out Goosecross Cellars and grab a bottle of Amerital) and binoculars for the multitude of birds you’ll be watching.

No height restrictions for this ride
This is Hi Liner in the flesh paddling with a full boat. A seven-year-old, a 10-year-old, a four-year-old (river dog counts too), a Hi Liner, and a nine-year-old all comfy in the Sunny. Between head dunks and spin moves this was the most behaved crew I have ever captained.
Russian River
8600 River Rd, Forestville, CA
Quick disclaimer. That address is to Burke’s Canoe Trips. You can choose to rent a canoe at Burke’s and get a shuttle back or you can put in for free and give it a go on your own. But don’t think that going on your own will be hard. This part of the Russian River is easy and beautiful. If you’re feeling frisky you can practically go from Burke’s to the ocean. Lots of forest, lots of beach, lots of swimming. If you see the River Dog in a kayak floating near you be sure to say hello.
River Dog
She doesn’t paddle much, but she’s big on giving kisses.
Loch Lomond Reservoir
100 Loch Lomond Way Felton, CA 95018
Just the name sounds fancy. This reservoir hiding in the Santa Cruz mountains is arguably the prettiest paddling spot in the Bay Area. Redwoods and firs grow right down to the shoreline. An island beckons paddlers to BBQ. And after you’ve smelled the air and tasted the BBQ, take a hike along the shoreline and head up to get a view of this amazing lake from the top of the mountain.
This...
is worth the trip.
Calero Reservoir
23028 McKean Rd, San Jose, CA
This big guy weighs in at 333 acres. My favorite time to paddle Calero is in the spring when the wildflowers are popping up everywhere. The only downside from this beautiful place is the pollution leaking into the reservoir from a nearby mine. If you catch any fish, put them back. Especially if they resemble Blinky.
Even when the river is low
She is all about safety.
Big Sur River
47225 Hwy 1 Big Sur, CA 93920
This river can be fickle. You need to time it right or she’ll leave you stranded. The best time is after the rains have filled it up, usually in late winer or early spring. Any time other than that may leave much to be desired. But if you can get there during the sweet spot be ready for some amazing redwoods and cold swimming holes. The river is dotted with campgrounds so take-outs and put-ins are plentiful.
Somehow this song wouldn’t sound as hardcore if Andy was screaming kayak instead of boat.
Cold River
Just because the weather is a little chilly is no reason to skip the trip. Put on a beanie, grab some gloves, put on some layers and you’re good to paddle.
No Trip is Complete Without:
BEER!
My current river favorite is Lost Coast Brewery’s Stout. So good on so many levels. Beer never tastes as good as it does on the river.
